to follow. Your other

your kidneys are weak or out of order,
you can understand how quickly your en

If you are sick or " feel badly," begin

Portland Union Stockyards, May 11.
An advance of Ec was quoted In the
swine market here today. The fact
that the eastern markets have been

has added to the local strength and
one lot was sold In the Stockdale

There was only a limited run of
hogs In the yards today; not quite a

sufficient to bring the price to a high

It is a coincidence, too, that on this
day, a year ago, there developed a
firmer tone In the hog market and
prices at that time had reached the
highest mark of the season.
Hest Steers Sell at $0.25.
There remains quite a good tone tn
the cattle market. Besides vthe stuff
sold prior to arrival, 20. loads were
sold this morning at the same price.
This indicates that the market is
holding steady at that figure. '
A drop of about 10c to -5c is shown
In the market for sheep today In the
stockyards. There were arrivals of
700 head for the day, four loads hav
ing come this morning from Rose
burg. Among the Shippers,
Cattle R. A. Robinson was In from
Merced, Cal., with 1 loads of cattle,

Mixed stuff J. C. Davis had a mix
ed load of hogs and sheep from Shedd,'
C. H. Farmer had a similar mixture
from McCoy, Ore.
Sheep Louis Burke shipped four

FOR MOTHERS-IN-LAW
Spokane, Wash. Rev. Bruce Brown
pastor of Dean Avenue Christian
church of Spokane, scored the hit of
his life at the Mothers' Day exercises
under the direction of the Young Wo
men's Christian association on May
8, when he said among other things
In the course of his address tc the
young women:
"For. the maligned and mistreated
tribe of mothers-in-law I want to
speak a good word today. . Almost
every mother must some time In her
life become a mother-in-law, and It
will not be easy for you to have your
boy put another woman first In his
life. I lay upon the conscience of the
many young women before me that
they never become Jealous of the love
that their sweethearts give to their
mothers. It is one of the tragedies of
life for woman, who has guided every
step of her boy, to see him place an-,
other first in his affection. Some day
you may taste the bitterness of that
cup So you should love your mother-in-law
as you would be beloved."

MOTHER'S Ml
A LINIMENT FOR EXTERNAL USE.
Baby's coming will be a time of rejoicing, and not of ap
prehension and fear, if Mother's Friend is used by the expec
tant mother in preparation of the event. This is not a medi
cine to be taken internally, bnt a liniment to be applied to the
body, to assist nature in the necessary physical changes of the system. Moth
er's Friend is composed of oils and medicines which prepare the muscles and
tendons for the unusual strain, render the ligaments supple and elastic, aids in
the expanding of the ckin and flesh fibres, and strengthens all the membranes
and tissues. It lessens the pain and danger at the crisis, and assures future
health to the mother. Mother's Friend is sold at drug stores. Write for our

LEONCAVALLO IS SORRY FOR
JOKE" TURNED ON HIMSELF
Milan. Slgnor Leoncavallo, who Is
recovering from a dangerous Illness,
recounts an amusing experience that
befell him some time ago In Manches
ter theater, where he occupied a stall
one evening to hear the performance
of his "Pagliaccl." ' At the finale a
stranger sitting near him kept ex
claiming enthusiastically. "What a
masterpiece! ' What a perfect master
piece!"" Leoncavallo, imagining himself ut
terly unknown m the audience,
thought it would be fine fun to play
the critic of his own work, so chimed
n ironically: "A . masterpiece? I
don't in- the least agree with you, sir.
I'm a musician myself, so know what
I'm talking about. The fact is, this
opera is a worthless production, and
brimful of imitations and plagarisms.
For Instance, that cavatina is filched
bodily from Berlioz, the duet In the
first act is all Gounod, while the fi
nale is a sorry copy of one you will
find In Verdi."
Next morning Leoncavalla drove to
the railway station and bought the
leading local journal. On comfort
ably seating himself In the train he
opened it, and was aghast with aston
ishment at encountering the follow
ing headlines: "Slgnor Leoncavallo's
opiniqn on 'Pegllaccl.' Declaration
of plagarism. Confession of a com
poser bereft of all originality." The
great Italian master adds: "Evident

had dogged rae, but to thls.day I have
cold shivers every time I recall the
Incident."
