tions are being made by the Lewlston
Commercial club for an exhibition' of
Lewlston Valley apples at the Na
tional Apple show at Spokane, and the
succeeding show to be held In Chi
cago following the next fall.
Library Building at Bend.
Bend, Ore. The Bena . TownBite
company will erect a building for the
local library. "The new library build
ing will probably be 20x40 feet. The
main room will be about 30 .feet long
and there will be a smaller room at
the rear for storing fuel . and for
packing.
Building at Ellensburg. .
Ellensburg, Wash. G. A. Knox be
gan Tuesday morning the erection of
a one-story building on Pine street
between Third and Fourth. A .con
tract with Maurice Turner was sign
ed Monday. The building will : be
60x100 feet. It will contain two store
rooms and an office, and will be
thoroughly modern. It is to be com
pleted In June. The cost Is estimate
at 110,000.
OH Well 2630 Feet Deep.
untario, ore. Work Is progressing
on the Ontario oil well ranMiv it
has now. attained a depth of 2630 feet,
the deepest oil or gas well In the west,
outside of the California oil fields.
A six inch casing has been put into
the bottom. The drill i nnw In a
shale formation which grows harder
with depth. . This is considered a
very promising indication by experi
enced oil men. The oil indications
are growing better dally.
Grants' Pass Appeals to Carnegie.

Railroad Work Expected. I
HuBUm, Wash. Field Engineer
Balhizcr, who made the survey of the
Columbia River and Mount Adams
Railroad up the White Salmon River
last fall, was here Saturday in the
interest of the proposed line.
He was accompanied by a repre
sentative of the Seattle, Portland and
Spokane -railroad, and several water
power sites were investigated between
this point and the Trout Lake region.
- They also interviewed ranchers
where right-of-way is yet to be se-1
cured, leaving the general impression
that the railroad company expects to
commence operations within, a short
time.
IIoIho Project Financed.
Boise, Idaho. Word has reached
Boise that the Bruneau project, 600,
000 acres, also known as the west end
Twin Falls extension, has been finan
ced by Frank H. Buhl, Archie Mllner,
son of the late S. B. Mllner. and others
who have become . associated with
them In this tremendously Important
Carey act undertaking, the estimated
cost of which is $20,000,000.
The financing of the enterprise has
been turned over to the -Public Se
curities company of New Jersey,
which is understood to have been or
ganized by Mr. Buhl for the purpose.
An announcement Issued by the Pub
lic Securities company mentions the
financiers interested. It Is stated
Boise will be the headquarters of this
project. . "

the Coffleld ranch, on the Columbia
river, this county, and will connect
with the state road now under course
of construction along that river.
The road will be six miles In length.
will cost $36,200, and will be built of
cement and rock.
The contract for building It has
been awarded to N. D, Miller, who ex
pects to construct a model road. -
