Portland, April 28. The Dalles
cherry crop g said to have better
prospects this season than ever be
fore. II. S. Rice, brother of George Rice
the local commislon merchant, who
was In Portland from the Cherry City,
said that the green cherries are so
thick that nothing short of a miracle
would stop that section from produc

"Fruit blossoms," he Bays, "are
heavier than ever before and' unless
weather conditions are unfavorable
It will be necessary tothln out a large
per cent of them because the trees
will bo unable to withstand the heavy
loads of fruit when they mature."
The prospect for a bumper crop of

loss of 1-c In the opening of the July
while the start of September was un

of 5-8c at the closing of the market.
Showing the strength In the May

CONSUL TO CHEMNITZ
II S EYE FOR HOSIERY
Washington The state department
always knew thnt Thomas H. Norton
was a versatile sort of a fellow. He
was born In New York and educated
In Ohio. That's one reason ho was
glv n the post of consul at Chemnitz,
Saxony. T'ut not until his last report
came In did Secretary Knox fully
realize Norton's capacity for research
or his powers of observation.
"Of Inte years there has been dis
satisfaction over the liability of hos
iery, especially the finer grades, to
tenr where the ordinary hoso support
ers are hooked or attached." says the
consul to Chemnitz. "The complaints
have increased ns the oM-fnshioned
garter has been utendlly discarded
for the more modern and hygienic
supporter. Two new styles of Chem
nitz hosiery have appeared, warrant
ed free from defect. In the first de
sign an ndditlonnl 'garter welt' Is knit
about the top nnd forms a constituent
part of the stocking four inches bo
low the customary welt. The addi
tional cost per dozen pnir Is 12 cents.
"A second design presents two
broad loops on opposite sides of a
stocking, starting five Inches below
the top. They are one Inch wide and.
nn Inch and a half long, former dur
ing the operation of knitting, and
constitute an Integral part of the
stocking. Supporters can easily be
attached to these loops, but tho re
sults of wear cannot extend (o the
stocking proper. . The addition costs
10 2-3 cents perdozcn pairs of hose."
