11. Only three head of cattle arrived
la the yards during the paBt 24 hours
aad one of these brought the highest
price ever paid in this market for a

The transaction was a single heifer
aad the price paid was $7 per hun
dred founds.
This sale would Indicate that the
Market for real good steers would
be as high as 37 and perhaps more, if
the quality was presented.
The trouble with the cattle market
of late has been the lack of good stuff
aad were better quality offering, there
Is no doubt that all recent prices
weuld have been elevated.
The two other . cattle that arrived
were sold at $5, but they were ex
tremely light. ,

Despite the small arrivals of live
stock at this time, there was an In
crease In arrivals of the various
grades during the month of March
over the same month a year ago. The
Increase was 3607 head of cattle, 382
head of hogs and 1102 head of sheep.
Total arrivals during the past month
were 410. Tn view of the fact that
March and April are always consid
ered dull months for livestock move
ment, the Bhowing is especially favor
able. The total movement of livestock
during March shows:

The increase In the run of hogs
during the month is due Xo the recent
arrivals from Nebraska in the yards.

D. O. Lively, general agent, "while
not complete, shows that less how
have been brought here from the east
, than during former years'. This Is
due to the fact that Portland territory
Is growing. I have Just returned
from a trip through the Interior on
the demonstration train and find that
more people are going into the hog
business. I believe tllat within 18
months we will be getting five cars
of hogs where wo are now getting a
single load."

and while general values are practi
cally unchanged, buyers are bidding
10c to 15c less than a few days ago.
Henry O. Stcffens had a mixed load
of cattlo and hogs from The Dalles on
today's market.

sheep from Arlington.
H. C. Hall shipped In 20 head . of
hogs on the steamer Mascot.

strength today was at the opening of
the wheat market. Options closed
1-8 to 3-4c a bushel higher than yes
terday. Starting with a burst of strength
that was Induced by a goodly amount
of short covering. May moved at a
range from $1.14 3-8 to $1.15, as com
pared with yesterday's closing at
$1.14 1-S. July and September each
showed l-4c advance at the opening,
with the start at $1.08 5-8 for the
July and $1.05 5-8 to $1.05 3-4 for
the September.
Snow's report of the damaged con
dition of the crops caused some buy
ing and short covering at the start.

Portland, Mar. 31. Several sales of

24 hours, and better prices were

was sold to a miller at $1.06 and noth

under $1.05. One lot of poor blue-
stem was sold nt 81, but it was Bald

aeronauts from colleges and universi

ance today at the first Intercollegiate
Aeronautloial convention at the Uni
versity of Pennsylvania. Cornell and

expected to result in the formation of
a permanent organization of college

was appropriately observed In Chicago
by a change In the street car traffic
rules, by which the cars stop at the
near. Instead of the far corners. Thou
sands of people were foolod most ef
fectively. The plan of having cars strip on the
near corner is not a new one. It was
tried here about fifteen years ago, and
waslhen abandoned In response to the
pleadings of car patrons, that they
could not learn new habits.
It is claimed that the new system
will expedite the handling of cars, and
will prevent congestion during the
rush hours.
