dale, March 24 Cattle prices gath
ered around the 37 mark today and
broke all previous records for this
and other Pacific coast markets.
Top steers sold at $6.75 In the
yards today, although some effort
was made to stretch the price to $7.
Ten loads of steers were sold at this
price. The California shipment of
steers brought $6.40. These were
light, though of good quality. Hogs
sold up to $11.10.
Operations at Stockdale were quite
fair, there being a run of 778 head
of cattle, 115 hogs and 65 sheep dur
ing the 24 hours. A large per cent
of the cattle" arrivals were of good
quality. The best stuff In today came
from Idaho, but some very good qual
ity was shown among the arrivals
from California.
Other lines of livestock held firm,
with practically the same prices In ef
fect as yesterday.
Among the Shippers.
Goodale & Cassady had in eight
loads of cattle from Mount Hebron,
Cal.
J. C. Davis was an arrival from
Shedds with a mixed load of hogs and
sheep.
W. B. Wing had in a load of hogs
from Eugene.
John Kennedy brought in eight
loads of cattie from Idaho Fulls, Ida.
M. I. Yates brought In three loads
of cattle from Echo.
Kidwell & Caswell brought In four
loads of cattle from Malad, Idaho,
and five loads from Blackfoot.
H. C. Strickland had in a load of
horses from Caldwell, Idaho.
E. E. Willard shipped two loads of
cattle and calves from Ontario, Ore.

the plant. Reports of winter
'killing are chiefly confined to
Kansas, with all drawbacks con
sidered, there Is foundation for
a winter wheat crop equal to
or better than the average. Fa
vorable progress being made In
other agricultural features,
spring eplnlng favorably in the
northwest.

and closed higher.
July was the agressor in the bull
campaign today and showed the lar
ger trading. Closing of the general
market was 1-4 to 5-8c a bushel high
er than yesterday.
Weakness at the start gave way to
considerable firmness at Liverpool to
day. Opening there was l-8d lower
and the closing l-8d to 7-8d higher
than yesterday.
There was a somewhat Improved de
mand for cash wheat from millers
and nt Minneapolis millers were pay
ing 1 1-2 to 2 l-2c premium over the
Mav for No. 1 northern.

school course in moral hygiene an ab
solute failure. 11,. said the theory
in sexology s that the social evil can
be eradicated by knowledge, a mod
ern instance of the old Socratio dic
tum that knowledge and virtue are
one, adding:
"This dlctrine has come down
through the centuries with a mo
mentum buf little short of irresist
ible due. no doubt, to the magnifi
cent moral career of Socrates, in
whose life the doctrine was so lumi
nously illustrated nnd seemingly vin
dicated. We should bear in mind,
however, that this teaching was in
reality but little more than an un
conscious autobiographical disclus
ure, but not a principle of universal
validity. It assumed a will like his
own one that would serve only his
highest interests.
"The weakness of the theory was
demonstrated n the career of Socra
tes' disciple, Alciblndes. Handsome
and brilliant, this young Athenian was
the philosopher's darling. To him
