Z STEERS TAKE SHORT ant Ads. f rnKKV QUALITY SELLS 10 CENTS IiOWEIt TO $5.0.1 Vivernl Rules of Extra Good Quality Mu0 at liowcr Prices in Yards nogs and Sheep Are Firm. Portland ' Union Stockyards, Stock dale, Feb. 16. Market for cattle was quoted slow during the pant 24 hours, according to official announcement made by the Portland Livestock Ex change. The liberal run of cattle In the yards yesterday had a depressing ef fect upon buyers and therefore their wants were all too enslly supplied. Top for extra good steers In the yards during the past 24 hours was $5.8C, or 10c below the high value Teached several days ago, when the new high record for the season was made. Several sales at $5 G5 were made during the day and some very good quality was shown. Sales of good steers were made down ns low as 5, although others of this quality were made-up to $5 40. Cows sold In the yards during the art 24 hours up to $4.60, although the quality was merely good, not first class. The fact that there have been few arrlvalH fpf cows recently, is a help to that branch of the cattle mar ket, although It Is not likely that sales will be made In this line nt a price greater than $1 less than the price of best steers. There was no run of cattle In the yards during the past 24 hours and If this Is continued for awhile it will In all probability have a stiffening ef fect upon values. Absence of arriv als In the yards today was not felt by the trade because buyers' wants have been well filled recently. Fact that no hops have been receiv ed In the Tortland stockyards for nearly a week, Is holding that mar ket very firm and therefore It seems to be the general opinion of the trade that former top quotations will be easily continued. While the local market Is generally boosted or com pressed by the height of values In the eat jnd mid. He wet. and very limit ed arrivals will s.Mrcly hi- affected by that eondit on at presrnt. Chicago wheat trade was not of ag gressive disposition during today's session and the volume of business was light In comparison with recent weeks. Even the fact that the visible sup ply shows a huge decrease from a year ago failed to Infuse any great activity Into the trading. The betterment of cash wheat liuylnp at primary centers and the slight advance In the bids as well as the Improved foreign situation, were all aids of consequence to support the bull cause Liverpool opened l-2d to 6-Rii high er and closed with a not advance of 5-Sd to 7-8d above yesterday. Portland. Feb. 15. So far as the grain trade Is concerned there Is little miAri in the market at this time. lAicnl conditions are stagnant and the trade Is not Inclined to even iook ai ..., vi nutsidn markets are doing. Therefore, to compare the local mar ket with outside prices wouia oe im possible. All big millers and buyers have stayed away from the market for a longer time recently than ever before. Conditions In the Pacific northwest are peculiar In themselves and there fore, we are out of line with happen ings elsewhere. It Is still Impossible to state wheth er reseedlng will be necessary In a large portion of the Pacific northwest wheat acreage and therefore little ef fort has been mado recently either by buyers or sellers to get local wheat out of the territory. r.OI.FKRS or FNOLAVD AND AMERICA COMPETE London. Professional golfers representing John Bull and Uncle Sam wilt test conclusions In an tntnrnntlonal contest commenced to day on the links of a London aubur- ban club. o ik ic OREGON Union Pacific AMD C. J. SALIENT POINTS IN TIE Here 'is a brief synopsis of the Oregon Traction company: 1 Pendleton people are asked to Invest $50,000 In stock of the Washington-Oregon Traction company. 2 The first payment of $20,000 or two-fifths of the subscription becomes due after the company has built three miles of road within fr the city and vicinity and established gasoline-electric car service. 3 The second payment of $20,000 or two-fifths of the subscription becomes due after the company has built six miles of track, established car service upon the same and provided a public park upon which a minimum of $10,000 is to be spent in Improvements The third payment of $10,000 or the remaining one-fifth, be- comes due after the company has electrified Its line with electricity from Its own power plant. It agrees to do this within two years time. 6 The Washington-Oregon Traction company agrees to spend a minimum of $200,000 within the next two years In this city and vi- clnlty and in developing their power plant. 6 The directors of the traction company sign a personal bond Insuring that the company will perform every provision of Its contract. Unless it aoes so the directors will return to Pendleton subscribers the amounts of their subscriptions In cash or else give them prop- erty of equivalent value. 7 The directors signing the bond and contract are Samuel Drum- heller, president; A. S. Baumelster, John Smith, Mrs. Alvina A. Baumelster and D. KitzGerald. 8 Pendleton stockholders are to name at least, one member of the company's board of directors. SOME ADDITIONAL POINTS. Here are some additional points: The traction company is to get first expended Its own money upon its line and in equipping the same. , 2 It Is estimated the company will spend twice as much money In Pendleton as It will receive from local people. Perhaps much more. The traction company, according to the statement of Samuel Drumhellcr, president, has made a contract for 52 miles of steel, the contract being contingent upon the raising of the Pendleton money. 4 The success of the Washington-Oregon company's enterprise means an additional power supply for Pendleton and thus cheaper electricity for lighting and for power purposes. 5 The establishment of a traction system such as the Washing- ton company promises, will connect Pendleton with all ita tributary territory and so insure the commercial supremacy of this place. 6 Ample and cheap electrical power, such as the Washington- Oregon company promises, will strengthen Pendleton's present man- ufacturlng Industries and bring new industries to the city . The teams are composed of the pick of the professional golfers on the two sides of the Atlantic and will be the first international contest of that nntnra over hel.l in colfine circles. The English team Is captained by J. II. Taylor of Mid-surrey, tne tingusn open champion and generally re garded as one of the most scientific of the present golf players. The American end of the arrange ments has been In. charge of H. H. Barker of Garden City, who won the Irish open championship and the Yorkshire championship. Alec Smith, winner of the American open championship in 1906, is cap tain of the American aggregation, and, in addition to Barker, the other players will be Gilbert Nichols, of Wilmington; Isaac Macklo of Fox Hills; David Hunter of Essex county, and James Marden of the Naaseau club. 10 Reward.
