45 Days for Stealing Chickens.
The Dalles. Flrty-five days in
jail is the penalty Tom Maloney will
pay for stealing half a dozen chick
ens. Maloney was arrested yester
day and pleaded guilty to larceny of
the chickens, whereupon he was sen
tenced by the justice of the peace to
serve 45 days in Jail. Maloney is an
old resident of The Dalles, and was
formerly a railroad brakeman .
Adventists to Luild Church.
Forest Grove. Ore. The Seventh
Day Adventists have purchased
ground In this city and will erect a
church edifice thereon in the near
future. The plans for the building
are now in the hands of a Portland
firm of architects, and the building
committee will proceed with the work
as soon as the blue prints are received.

Chehalin, Wash. Caught with the
goods with'n a few hours after their
arrival in Chehalis was the fate of
two men who are lodged in the coun
ty Jail here. They are accused of
robbing a man named Johnson who
was a passenger on train 302 last
night. A watch and $30 in money
were taken. The watch was recover
ed and $27 In cash was found on the
men. They made the cleanup be
tween Winlock and Chehalis and will
be tried in this county.

trees have been sold here during the
past 15 days to plant 1000 acres of
land next spring. The varieties or
dered are Spitzenbergs, Yellow New
towns, Pippins and Winter Bananas.
It Is sa d that a Spokane concern
that recently purchased 850 acres
north of town will plant 75 acres to
apples and 60 acres to pears and
plums next year.
Dr. E. C. Sutner of Walla Walla,
has bought 60 acres of fruit land near
here for $17,600. R. B. Drain of
Chehalis. has bought 16 acres for
fruit at $400 per acre.

not troublesome now, and by proper

$1000 for 1010 Boost Fund.
Eugene, Ore. There remains near
ly $1000 in Eugene's 1909 publicity
.fund. It will be applied to the 1910
fund, which has reached the sum of
$13,000. The board of governors
has not yet selected a successor to
John II. Hartog, the publicity man
nger who recently resigned. The
board has elected the following offi
cers: F. M. Wilklns, president; W.
A. Bell, vice president; R. McMur
phey, secretary and treasurer. The
other members of the board are: P.
L. Campbell, E. Schwarzschlld, W. J.
Hill, L. R Fl'nt, F. R. Wethrebee,
und F. W. Osburn.
C. E. of Two Counties to Join.
North Yakima, Wash The Chris
tian Endeavor soe'eties of Yakima
and Kittitas counties are to form a
union on the occasion of the visit
here on February 19 of President
Francis E. Clark and International
Treasurer William Shaw of the
Christian Endeavor society. Ar
rangements already are on foot to
have delegates present from every
society In the two count'es. It is
proposed to form a strong united or
qanization, by which effective work
can be done throughout the entire
Yakima valley.

Flax Factory for Chehalis.
Chehallls, Wash. Word has been
received hero that two carloads of
the flax machinery that Is to be In
stalled here by the United States
Flax Twine Manufacturing company
has been shipped from Renton,
Wash. The plant will be Installed In
the old flax fiber factory in the south
part of the city and when the con
cern is once Installed it is expected
that it will employ about 26 or 30
people. Twine will be one of the
first products to be made, but later
eg the business develops, it is hoped
to work Into the weaving lines. It

Mr. Chamberlain is an old Albany

G. E. Nichols, proprietor of the
Royal bakery, will move his business
from Its present location on Second
street to the building now occupied
by Mrs. Nichols' millnery store on
First street. Mrs. Nichols is now
selling out her stock. The building
now occupiel by the Royal bakery
has been leased for a number of years
to a Portland restaurant man .

Kansas City. One of the rarest
suig'cal operations In the world has
just been performed here as a last
resort in an attempt to save the life
of Johnny Herren, 14 years old, who
is at the General hospital.
One hundred square Inches of the
boy's burned flesh was covered with
the skins of young rabbits. This Is
but a third of the total surface to be
covered with rabbit skin and Johnny
will be upon the road to recovery.
For several months the child has
lain In agony almost with the entire
right side a mass of raw flesh. On
May 7, he was badly burned when a
playmates put some, powder Into his
hip pocket and touched a, match to
It. Nearly all the skin from the
boy's shoulder to his knee on the
right side was burned.

Sacramento. A campaign for the
extermination of mosquitoes In the
great Inland valleys of California Is
being planned by the state board of
health. The establishment of the
fact by microscopic tests that malar
la Is conveyed by mosquitoes and In
fact spnads In no other way, and
the practical stamping out of the
disease where the mosquito pest Is
controlled, have led to the determi
nation on the part of the health
board to commence work.
Dr. Snow, secretary of the board,
announces that ranchers and prop
erty owners will be Instructed v to
drain all small pools of stagnant wa
ter about their premises. Town
boards will be lined up to cooperate
w'th Individuals In forcing the re
forms. Patlente suffering with ma
laria will be- screened from mos
quitoes. Instructions will also be given in
the use of quinine, the natural spe
cific for malaria.
