Portland, April 29. There la much
weakness Jn the sheep market and
values In effect today at the yards
are about 25c lower than yesterday.
Buyers continue very bearish as to the
Immediate figure of prices because
everyone Is expecting a very liberal
run of sheep within the next week or
10 days. Therefore for that reason,
If for no other, buyers are Inclined to
look askance at present values and
are noi ouying more man their im
mediate requirements would Justify,
Best shorn wethers, while ranging In
some Instances as high as $5 are gen
erally selling around $4.75 and lambs
are down to $6 as the top In moHt In
stances.
Receipts of Sheep for the day were
rather light but following the very
heavy run of yesterday, the small
number did not at all favorably im
press buyers so far as prices arc con
eerned. For the day the run was 221
head compared with 2875 yesterday,
438 Tuesday and 375 Monday. A week
ago today the arrivals in the yards
did not Include any Bheep.
Few potatoes Remain.
In the state of Oregon at the pres
ent time In the hands of shippers and
growers, tnere remain just 143 cars
of potatoes, while seven additional
ears are held In Clarke county, Wash
ington. As these are tributary to this
city and Invariably enter the Portland
market, there are Included In the gen
eral estimate which gives a total of
150 cars of potatoes In this territory
In the hands of shippers and pro
ducers. A-few cars are held by com
mission merchants, but the total
would not amount to more than a
dozen cars, most of these being held
by two Front street houses Dryer,
Rollman & Co., and Davenport Bros,

lteeauso of the extreme scarcity of
supplies and the Inability of the trade
to secure more, the price is fldvanc
Ing steadily everywhere. In the Front
street markets the price of best stock
Is stiff at $2, and even at this figure
dealers are not nnxlous to unload
Some of them believe they will secure
at least $2.25 In the very near future,
and are therefore not pushing Btocks
on the market. On the other hand
as high as 11.80 lias been paid at
country shipping points for small lots
during the past 24 hours, this putting

$1.90 per hundred pounds and mnk

such stork under I2.15ff2.25.
Xo Wheat Offered.
Wheat growers are not offering any
supplies on the market at this time
and the only business of late has been
between dealers.
Buyers have scoured the Interior
for wheat but say there is none to of
fer there, because growers have none
to sell at any price.
Oats and barley markets are firmer
but business In theso lines Is nominal
On the board of trade today, how
ever, 20 tons of No. 1 white oats were
offered nt $41 a ton f. o. b., but there
were no takers at this price.

CHICKEIUNG PIANOS
Most any one can make a piano, but an instrument to commend itself to critical
minds must have external finish and more; 'it must be imbued with that indes
cribable something called Soul.
A Chickering Piano is a pride and joy. It never disappoints. Great composers
have used it to express in tone pictures their joys, griefs, their souls. Soft,
sweet and soothing its tone has that peculiar richness that lulls the mind to rest.
At the days' end what more desirable a companion than a Chickering? It
23 completes the home circle.

TIGHT CHRISTIAN SCIENTISTS.
Baptist Ministers of Portluiid Declare
Wur on rultli Healer.
Portland, Or. Denouncing Christ
ian Science as a "fake" doctrine which
appeals largely to the more Ignorant
classes, or those who In time of
trouble or Illness are governed by sen
timent, the members of the Baptist
Ministerial association will make over
tures to the physicians apd surgeons
of Portland to assist financially In
taking steps to stay the inroads the
cult is making on denominational and
profewlonal -work.
The first step toward the forma
tion of a Joint defense board was tak
en this mvrnlng at the regular Mon
day meeting of the association at the
Y. M. C. A. building, when Rev. Clar
ence Cook, pastor of the East Forty
fifth i'lreet Baptist church, and Rev.
Arthur B. Walts, pastor of the Uni
versity Park church, .were appointed
a committee to confer with the phy
sicians as to ways and means of bring
ing to thin cltv F. W. Pea body, of
'Boston, the noted anti-Christian Sci
ence lecturer, for a series of addresses.
Hev. J. F. Heacock, pastor of the
Highland Baptist church, waxed vitri
olic In giving his opinion on Christian
Science, but doubted the advisability
adopting the methods suggested In
combating It.
I think the Individual pastor
should himself specialize in fighting
this doctrine," he asserted. "The peo
ple who Join the ranks are for the
most part td be found In the more Ig
norant classes, while others fall vic
tims owing to the personal nnd pecu
liar . Influences brought to bear on
them In times of sickness and trouble.
The doctrine makes little progress
among people of Intelligence."

EIGHTY MILLION
DEFICIT IN ENGLAND
London, April 30. Explaining that
It entailed a deficit of nearly eighty
million dollars, the chancellor of ex-
I chequer George, today presented the
budget for 1909-10 to the bouse of
commons. The Chancellor explained
that the deficit was largely due as a
result of the old age pension law and
other sources.
He refers to the increased naval
appropriations and states that tho
government did not attempt to ef
fect a loan, as they considered it bet
ter to meet the problem now rather
than postpone It longer.
He declared that the eight million
ill liars were provided for the con
struction of new Dreadnaughts would
bo expended only as the needs arose,
thus lightening the burden. He said
the growth of temperance had cut
down the revenues, of the government
materially, nnd declared that a tax
of from 24 to 28 cents must be im
posed upon every five dollars of In
comes of ten thousand dollars or over.

into effect until tod&y. Egg said that
his friends kept hammering away at
him, one day asking him if he was

omelet. The Jokes were funny enough
at first, but Egg said they 'lost their
