From r resent appearances Pendle ton will soon be equipped with at least one and possibly two public parks, instead of nine as at present. The women of the Literary and Civic association have taken upon them selves the ta.k of securing the parks and have entered into the work with the same degree of enthusiasm which made the cleaning up days and the public library, realities. The old Pmdleton academy cam pus on East Web street will be con verted into a pa without fail. This much is assured r)l the park will be ready fr the accommodation of the public this summer. But probably more important than this is the move undertaken to bring to a climax the agitation which has been made for three years or more to convert the deserted city cemetery' ia Xonh Pendleton, into a park. The women have progressed so far with their investigations that they now feel that success is already within their grasp. Create Park Commission. While the work has been taken up by the Woman's Library and Civic association, of which Mrs. Jas. A. Fee is the president, a park board or park commission will eventually be created to take charge of the work. It is now understood that all three members of the old cemetery board of trustees have signified their wil lingness to turn their interest in the Ci-metery over to a park commission which, enul.i bp held responsible for iht creation and care f tn9 I"rk. Such being the case It Is believed that the rpst will be comparatively easy avl that sooia this old eye sore to the city will l converted into a beauty spot. At a meeting ef the association ye. terdity afternoon, Mrs. Fee as presi dent, appointed Mrs. C. J. Smith as chairman of a committee to make nr rangemenu for the academy campus park. Negotiations will be entered into with the school board, the pro perty now being owned by the school district, and an effort will be made to secure some kind of an assurance that the grounds will not be sold for some other purpose, as soon as fitted up for a park. The site is already fairly well equipped with large shade trees and the length of time that the grounds can be had for a park will determine the extent to which the additional Improvements to the grounds will be carried on. It is certain however that the low places will be filled, that the entire site will be cleared of all rub bish, trees planted, and seats built for the comfort of the public?. A committee was also appointed to take up tSo old cemetery proposition, Mrs. J. F. Kobinson and Mrs. Frank Frazler-belns named to act on this committee.
