have gone to thu bow-wows on several
occasions, und It took a strong heart
to remain firm.
Steer prices, und In fact, all cattle
prices struck the bottom of the well;
the price of steers being weak even at
thu low level. While Iron! this there
has been no advance up to the pres
ent time, the Indications are that con
ditions will Improve somewhat be
fore long.
To the shipper of hugs October has
been .i month full of sorrows, for
while prices never really touched a
ruinous figure, values are consider
ably below the high market, from
where the slump started. Already
there has been a slight improvement
la the price of hogs, but It Is not now
expected that any further Improve
ment of note will be shown In that
line for several weeks or u month.
While the run of hogs was not so lib
eral as lat week, when the price
touched the bottom. It Just about suit
ed the demand.
Steer Murket Is Very Slow.
To the steer market there seems not
the Hl.ghtest show for Improvement
in the near future. As long as grass
fed stuff is shoved off onto the mar
ket, there will be a lack of support
to prices. Packers' requirements In
the steer line ut this time are very
rmail, because most of them are al
ready filled up with cheap-priced
stock. This will cause the Improve
ment to be postponed for a longer
time than would have otherwise been
the case. Among the livestock com
mission handlers the opinion is gen
eral that the market for steers will
not do much better for fully a month,
or until the grass-fed stuff is out of'
the way.
While there Is a slow call for steers i
the demand for cows and heifers Isj
liberal, but prices are not of the best.
There Is an especial good call for
upeyed heifers because of their low
price,"- considering the quality. ' j

the money had been turned over to
an attorney of this city, and an order
w.ll be asked in the superior court
tomorrow calling on the attorney In
the case to produce the funds. Held
wishes the estate to go to the state
school fund, and there promises to be 1411.

Japan, a large cargo of general mer
chandise. It was while the ship was
discharging cargo that the men slip
ped on board and secreted several
cases of chewing gum and mineral
water, and stowed themselves In the
hold, where they existed nearly two
months chewing the sweetened gum.
The captain says that had he not
found tho men the chances are they
would have been taken back to Ja
pan and thence to Liverpool. They
had eaten nearly three cases of chew
ing gum. The men will be taken
back to Japan. 1
