A moose head, shipped to W. F,
Matlock of this city, from Alaska, ar
rived here yesterday and Is now at the;
Wenaha club. Mr. Matlock has a
W. S. Dyers, the pioneer flour mill
man, sustained an estimated loss of
114.000 last evening when flames
broke out In his automobile shed be
tween the stable and the barley ware
house and destroyed both 'buildings
with practically all of the contents of
the former and much of the latter.
The origin of the fire, like tho uu
meroiis others which have occurred
In this city within the past few
weeks, is still a mystery.
The mules used tiy Mr. Byers In
connection with his mill busloews, and
also so-me cows, were rescued from
the burning strides, but the harness,
most of the drays and other vehicles,
hay and other conte.uts are a total
loss. The splendid, electric automo
bile, the only one In eastern Oregon,
was burned, and about 15.000 sacks
of barley which Dyers says were In
the warehouse, are damaged to the
extent of $6000 or more.
The damage sustained to the two
buildings added to the value of the
contents of the barn brings the" total
loss sustained up to at least $14,000.
Further Investigation may reveal a
ntlll greater loss. Only $2000 worth
of insurance was carried, this being
on the two buildings.
Only two theories as to the cause
of the fire have been advanced so
far. Mr. Dyers 'holds to tho theory
that someone has again attempted to
burn him out. while others believe
the fire wax caused by a short circuit
between electric wires used In charg
ing his automobile. Mr. Pyers, how
ever, ueclares there was no current
on and that the machine Is always
charged of a morning Instead of at
night.
One thing Is certain, and that Is
that the fire originated near the
auto and npread rapidly In both di
rections. The flames had gained
great headway before discovered and
though the volunteer department
made a remarkable run, both build
ings were apparently doomed before
the streams of water were turned on.
Within a very few minutes after the
alarm was turned in two streams of
water were playing on the flames
nnd within a tdiort time the fire was
under control and the big 'mill and
ether warehouses out of danger.
It was only a few minutes after 8
o'clock when the alarm was sounded
and because of this fact and the great
height to which 4he flames were
"hooting Into the air, an exceptional
ly large number of people turned out.
The fire was spectacular as well 83
destructive. Not only did the wooderl
barn burn like so much tinder, but
the brick veneer walls of the ware
house confined the flames to the in
side while the ventilator on top serv
ed as a flue through which the flames
wi re sucked high Into the ulr.

A penalty of 10 per cent will therefore
be added and all such taxes renjAiTi
ing unpaid will draw Interest from
tlie first Monday In April at the rate
of 12 per cent per annum.
According to the law a rebate or
three per cent Is allowed on all taxes
paid before March 15 of each year.
If taxes are paid after March 15 and
prior to the first monday In April, no
rebate will be allowed, neither is there
any penalty or Interest added, but If
one half of one's taxes are not paid
before the first Monday In April, they
become delinquent and In addition to
the 10 per cent penalty which Is add
ed they will draw interest at the rate
of 12 per cent.
If half of one's taxes are paid be
fore the first Monday In April, one
Is given until the first Monday In Oc
tobcr to pay the balance, but If the
'mfance Is not paid by that time the
penalty and Interest will be demand
ed as stated above.
Many persons take advantage of
this half payment provision and con
sequently last week was a busy one for
the deputies In the office of Sheriff
Taylor. Hetween $4000 and $5000
wna taken In Saturday alone. N'earlv
all of the taxes have now been paid
however, only a comparatively small
i mount being permitted to become
delinquent.
Oregon sheep, especially lambs, are
l.i great demand and thousands are
being shipped daily to the ranges In
Idaho and Montana. Two dollars per
head Is the ruling price for lambs
and this In comparison with former
ytars excepting the phenomenal high
pilces of last year, Is considered re
markably good.
J. B. Long & Co. shipped 4000
head from Heppner to Montana yes
terday, and today they are shipping
3CO0 head from Baker City to the
same range. In each case- the price
paid was $2 per head.
Saturday Danzle & Son shipped
3200 head from Wallowa city to Soda
Springs, Idaho, the price paid being
$2.12 per head. These sheep were
shipped out over the new Wallowa
extension of the O. R. & X.
C. E. Lukens shipped 2800 head of
yearlings from Baker Cltv to Cut-
bank, Mont., yesterday, but the price
paid for these Is not known.
Several buyers are now in or near
Tendleton and others are coming. All
arc In search of lambs as the local
ranges have been cleared of every
thing else that Is for sale at the pres
ent time. Ordinarily there would he
no lambs for sale as they would be
held until they were a vear old. but
owing to the past dry season, the
range is so short that local growers
will have approximately 20.00ft lamb.s
to offer.
The demand for lambs is excep
tionally good, however, and for that
rf ason the local sheepmen will not
suffer materially by being compelled
to sell at this time.
From present Indications the price
of winter mutton sheep will be high.
Very few Oregon men are feeding or
planning to feed owing to the scarc
ity of both hay and grain feed and
from the middle west comes the news
that owing to the high price of coin,
little of that cereal will be fed to
sheep this winter.
It therefore looks like the sheep
man who will have mutton to turn
off before the grass fed article Is
ready for the market will be able to
command a high price for his ani

a precarious condition and the final

rolls around in bed, but docs not
speak or understand when spoken to.
