A herd of racing ostriches one of
which ended n wild stampede by kill'
In K Itself made things lively for the
crowd nt the opening day of the
Queens-XuHsnu fair In Mlneola, L. I
yesterday, says the New York Ameri
can.
Just before the ostrich races were
to start. Judge Wing, blK mnlo bird
who went on a mm page the other
day and Injured two men, got out of
his cage and made a rush towards the
spectators who crowded about bis en
clsure, Luckily there was a high
fence between him and them.' He
could not scale It, though he leaped
again mid again.
W. V. Ford, the bird's trainer, mid
a negro helper, Jumped into the en
rloNiire and tiled to cature Fleet
Wing. Th" ostrich, wllh two mighty
kirks, tme open Ford's leg and laid
the negro low by a blow on the head.
Before lie fell, however, he slipped
a noose about Ffcct Wing's legs This
held him.
Enraged by his rapture, the giant
bird beat Ills head from side to side
Upon the pebbly ground. Ills frantic
blows'knocked out both his ryrs and
though a veterinary surgeon tried to
save him, be bled to death.
Scarcely was this Incident over
when another ostrich caused cmmo-
tlon. This was Miss Florida, who wns
hitched up to a little four-wheeled
sulky to race Fleet Foot, the dead
bird's customary opponent.
The two started around the half
mile track at trotting horse speed, un
til t t ry reached the first turn, where
they slowed down and had to be urg
ed on by yells from their drivers.
Tiny hit up a good pace again, and.
coming Into the stretch, Fleet Foot
took a good lead.
Chagrined by her defeat, apparent
ly. Mis Florida ran to the Inner rail,
stopped, then leaped over the fence,
dragging her sulky and driver behind
her. The harms broke and released
ber. but the man and sulky dropped
back. The driver was not hurt.
Miss Florida was net a bad bird like
Fieri Wing, and allowed herself to
be raptured without nnv fus.
