New York, Oct. 1. The first day
of October always marks the begin
ning of the hottest period of a presi
dential campaign, and this year is no
exception. Many prominent ntfn In
both parties, whose services as speak
ers have not heretofore been avail
able, reported for duty today. The
speakers bureaus of both parties have
completed the, itineraries of most of
the orators and every spell-binder will
be urged to push the campaign with
all vigor during October. Governor
Hughes will deliver two speeches here
today, prior to beginning a tour of
the middle west.
A comparison of the claims of both
parties shows that an even dozen
tates are included In the doubtful
column by the forecasters at the head
quarters of one or both parties. These
commonwealths are New York, New
Jersey, Indiana, Minnesota. Colorado,
Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, West
Virginia, Utah, South Dakota and
Wisconsin. Some of these states are
claimed as certainly republican by the
leaders In that party, while others are
Just as certainly placed In the demo
cratic column by the supporters of
Bryan. The principal battles" of the
campaign will be fought in these 12
tates, with New York and Indiana
the most important scenes of conten
tion. The 12 states which are placed by
one party or the other In the doubtful
column have a total electoral vote of
128. In other states which are con
sidered as reasonably certain to give

Despite the wrangle between the
two states over salmon fishing In the
Columbia river, which to date has re
sulted In an Injunction by the federal!
court restraining the Oregon authori
ties from attempting to enforce Ore
gon law for the time. Immense gooj
has been done .the salmon fishing in
dustry of the entire river, says a dis
patch from Portland, as a result of
Oregon's attempt to keep the upper
stretch of the stream 'closed for a sea
son. Since August 25, the date when the
new Oregon law placed a ban on fish
ing east of the Sandy, some fish have
of course been caught in the upper
river, for the most part by men who
deliberately Ignored the Oregon stat
ute with a view to having the matter
adjudicated by the courts, but the
operations were desultory and the
catch east of the Sandy to date has!
been but a fraction of what It would
have ben had the law not Interfered.
The result Is that not for many
years have so many of tlio fish been

licans can gain 46 electoral rotes from
the doubtful territory, according to
this showing, Mr. Taft will be the
next president of the United States
On the other hand, if the democrats
carry the doubtful territory to the
extent of winning 81 electoral votes,
Mr. Bryan will be the next occupant
of the White House.
If the Republicans can carry New
York and Indiana, Taft and Sherman
will almost certainly have a safe mar
gin In the electoral college. Unless
the unexpected happens and some of
the states normally republican should
go for Bryan, the democrats will have
to secure 27 electoral votes from the
