Portland Union Stockyards, Sept.
. There were very heavy arrivals
of hogs In the local market over Sun
day, but the tone -of the trade contin
ued firm and prices are unchanged.
The local hog market hns been si
sections are beginning to be attract
ed and it will not be long before the
Portland market will be considered
one of the best in the country. In
fact, the high prices in effect here
are causing all of these extra ship
ments. Today seven loads came in
from California.
Th stock from the south was of
very heavy weight, just what packers
of the Pacific northwest are looking
for.
The great strength of the hog sit
uation was shown today when local
packers advanced their quotations on
provisions. There was a rise of one
half cent a pound in both grades of
lard. Dry salt meats were moved up
the same figure and for the same
reason. There was a factional change
in bacon values.
Good Prices for Steers.
Present prices In the cattle mar
ket are very high considering the
quality. There is little top stuff com
ing and yet there are few sales of!
steers below $4 and from that figure
the market still rules up as high as
$4.25. Select steers are still very
scarce and the trade still expresses the
opinion that prices would reach high
er if tlie quality could be secured.
For two days the run of sheep was
small In the yards; over Sunday the
arrivals in the yards totaling but 250
head. The market is very firm at for
mer prices.
While there was a firm tone in all
lines of livestock today, trade was
small; buyers not seemingly caring to
purchase on the first day of the
week.
A year ago to. lay hogs were easy,
cattle easier and sheep very firm.

that the weather has averaged more
mild in that time than at Oskaloosa,
Iowa, where they formerly lived. Mr.

family next spring and farm his
