FOREST FIRES COST
The terrible work of tho flames
which baa burned over and destroy,
ed hundreds of thousands of acres of
timber and property to the valuo of
millions In the Lake Mates,- recalls
to memory other great forest fires
which have attained KMorlc Import
a nee.
One of the earliest of these was the
great Mlramlehl fire of 1825. It be
gan Its greatest dstruetlon about 1
o'clock In tho afternoon of October
7 of that year, at a place about 60
miles above the town of Newcastle,
on the Mlramlehl river, In New
IiruiiHWlck. Rcfore 10 o'clock fit
night it was 20 miles below Newcas
tle. In nine hours it had destroyed
a belt of forest 80 miles long and 25
miles wide. Over more than two and
a half million acres, almost every
living thing was killed. Even the
fish were afterwards found dead In
htaps on the river banks. Five hun
dred and ninety buildings were burn
ed, and a number of towns, Including
Newcastle, Chatham and Douglas
town, were destroyed. One hundred
and sixty persons perished, and near
ly a thousand head of stock. The
long from the Mlramlehl fire Is esti
mated at $300,000, not Including the
value of the limber.
The I'eshtigo fire of October 1871,
was still more severe than the Ml
ramlehl. It covered an area of more
than 2000 square miles in Wisconsin
and Involved a loss In timber and
other property of many millions of
dollars. Between 1200 and 1500 per
sons perished, Including nearly half
the population of I'eshtigo, at that
time a town of 2000 Inhabitants. Other

OF EASTERN CITIES.
It has been less than a year since
llitle Miss Maud Allen, an American
girl, hit upon the Idea of performing
a "Salome" dance as an entertain
ment separate from either the Wilde
or the famous Strauss operas. Miss
Allen selected London for her field
: operation. Site burst upon the old
city In an Egyptian dance and the
world began to hear nn.i to talk
about her and about "Salome." Now
we hear of several who have Imitat
ed her and who are meeting with
the same success in America. These
Include Gertrude Hoffman, who Is
now at Hammersteln's; Ui Sylph, an
other, Is now doing the dance at
Keith & Proctor's. In the Mimic
World, which Is now at the Casino,
Iitla Fans Is adding to her laurels
by giving the Maud Allen version of
the dance. So great Is the craze for
this latest European fad that Eva
Tanguay Is now giving a version of
"Salom" in her vaudeville sketch.
Margaret Taylor, w ho won In r first
ri cognition as a dancer In London, Is
another who has gone "Salome"
mad and she will be seen as "Sa
lome' In "Coming Thro1 th Rye."
Iji Pelle Zola, a little dancer hereto
fore unheard of, procured a few strips
of gauze and a dozen or so strings
of bends, which constituted the reg
ulation "Salome" costume, and se
cured an engagement at one of the
popular priced houses In New York
and leaped Into fame the first night.
Her services are now sought after by
many other theatrical managers. How
b rig this craze will last, there is no
telling. The Merry Widow hats, the
.Soul Kiss and the Waltz Dream
dance have been lost sight of by the
Inrush of this Oriental fad.
Tile costumes worn by the many
"Salome" dancers differ very mater
ially. One critic raid that a few
la ads and a little more gauze might
be worn by Lotta Kau-i and not de
tiact from the Oriental atmosphere
of the dance. The pre. agent says
that the costume worn by Miss Tay
lor differs more from the regulation

In speaking of Mhs Taylor's per
formance the Toledo Times has this
to say: "Miss Tabr's performance
differs from the original London

and randals. The Oriental costume,
together with that fantastic dance
about the head of John tht Baptist,
that dance which terminated with
the grewsonie kiss and swoon so. hor
rible and artistically portrayed In
Oscar Wilde's play, Is Indeed a won
derful and thrilling spectacle and tho
grace with which Miss Taylor per
ferins lt emphasizes Its classic beau
ty. So If you are one of those an
ticipating a shock this week, you will
be disappointed, for this Is one that
Isn't a shock. Rut It Is beautiful,
and it Is art."
The story of Salome Is a sad one,
as everyone knows. Salome was the
daughter of the wife of King Herod.
At his birthday feast she was asked
to dance. So pleased was he at the
art she displayed that he promised
to grant her the choice of any gift
within his power. Having no per
sonal wish, she consulted her mother,
Ilerodias. The royal lady caused her
to ask for the head of John the Bap
tist, who was lying In prison. Herod
at first expostulated, but he had
given his word and he compiled with
the young lady's wishes.
The king at once dispatched one
of his guardsmen to the prison with
the order to bring to him the head
of John the Baptist.
The orders of the king were
promptly carried out and the head
presented to Salome on a charger. As
soon as Salome caught sight of the
head she realized for the first time
the gravity of her demand. As she
looked at the head the dead eyes
seemed to follow her In all her move
ments and she was seized with ter
ror and remorse and fainted.
It Is this tragic picture which has
set two continents wild with excite
ment. It attracts by Its gruesome
nees as well as grace and beauty of
poetic motion to strains of Oriental,
dreamy music.

strip about 40 miles wide and 180
miles long, extending across tho cen
tral part of the state, from Lake
Michigan to Lake Huron, was devas
tated. The estimated loss In timber
was about 4,000,000 feet board meas
ure, and In money over $10,000,000.

In the early part of September,
1881, great fires covered more than
1800 square miles In various parts of
Michigan. The estimated loss In
property, In adilltlon to many hun
dred thousand acres of valuable tim
ber, was more than $2,800,000. Over
5000 persons were made destitute,
and the number of lives lost Is vari
ously estimated at from 150 to 500.
The most destructive fire of more
recent years was that which started
mar Hinckley, Minn., September 1,
1S94. While the area burned over
was less than In sme other great
fires, the loss of life and property
was very heavy. Hinckley and six
ether towns were destroyed, about
500 lives lost, more than iOOO per
sons were left destitute, and the es
timated loss In property of various
Hnds was $25,000,000. Except for
the heroic conduct of locomotive en.
glneers and other railroad men the
loss of life would have been much
greater.
This fire was all the more deplora
ble because It was wholly unneces
sary. For many days before the high
wind came and drove It Into uncon
trollable fury, It was burning slowly
close to the town of HInkley, and
could have been put out. '
And until a new craze is found to
take Its place, the "Salome" dance
will continue to monopolize the at
tention of theater-goers and lovers of
art, for It Is truly a work of art. We
are fortunate In being able to Judge
for ourselves a dance that ' has so
captivated the public that one can
not pick up a paper or magazine
without reading something about It.
There will likely be a general pol
ishing up of opera glasses when j
"Coming Thro the Rye" Is presented, j
for there are probably as many fol
lowers of art In this city as elsewhere.
Manager Mitchell is very fortunate in
securing so strong an attraction. It
will be at the New Oregon October 1.

TO DENVER CONVENTION
New York. Sept. 24 A veritable
palace train deluxe, with every lux

will leave New York for Denver to
morrow carrying the metropolitan
delegates to the convention of the
American Bankers' association.

part in the Junket. In addition to
participating In the sessions of the
bankers' convention in Denver, the
easterners will take advantage of the
