Hermiston, Sept. 12. School open
ed In Hermiston yesterday, over a
hundred pupils enrolling In the five
rooms of the new 18000 concrete
block building which was erected for
that purpose during the past summer.
The outlook for educational work In
the coming year Is exceptionally
bright.
The school Is In charge of Prof. F.
B. Pennock. formerly of Milton, Miss
Bertha Randall will teach the hlgh
acriool grades, Mrs. B. O. Monkman
those of the grammar rooms, Miss
Jessie Williams the Intermediate, and
Mrs. TV. G. Rodda the primary grades.
The enrollment showed a consid
erable Increase In the school popula
tion of Hermiston during the summer
months and was a great contrast to
the opening of school two years ago
when but 18 pupils were entered in
the various classes.
The new building Is a handsome
structure of concrete blocks, well fin
ished throughout and fitted with
modern heating and plumbing.
Land sales have been active the
past week. Colonist travel from the
east to Oregon Is bearing fruit In
peopling the Hermiston valley
Slowly the Fruitgrowers' union un

out of chaos and Is accomplishing its
end In securing a uniformity of plant

with deliberately setting fires In the
I'niatllla forest reserve on two separ
ate occasions, Tulle Spray Is fleeing
toward Canada with Forest Supervise1"
Thomas E. Chldsey and one of his
rangers In close pursuit. The United
States district attorney and the
I'nited States marshal may have un
dertaken to assist In the capture. It
Is said Spray cannot escape conviction
and that he has little chance of get
ting away.
Spray Is charged with setting the
first fire August 29, but owing to Its
discovery before it had gathered great
headway, the farmers and forest ran-
gt rs were able to control It before
much damage had been Inflicted.
Spray hail made several Incautious
statements concerning the origin Of
the fire and he was thereafter closely
watched. When ho went Into the re
serve September 2 the rangers were
close behind him but he succeeded In
starting a blaze which spread over
f.ve or six sections of timber land be
fore It could be subdued.
Spray Is a cowboy who has used the
range covered by the Umatilla forest
reserve for a great many years, and
it Is said he has bitterly opposed tlu
control of the grazing privilege by the
government, as well as the settlement
of the country, which has progressed
rapidly during the season. He has
been at enmity with the settlers and
has caused them many annoyances,
n suiting In the attempt to burn them
out.
If convicted the penalty which the
court can Inflict Is a fine of not more1
than $3000 and Imprisonment for not
more than two years, or both. The

He plans to bring a host of 1000 to

the "soldiers of the Lord" will march
from Zlon City to Chicago.

sand members to the church of Zlon.
Voliva's caustic works were direct

of Lawrence O. Murray, comptroller of
the currency, the bank examiners of
tlie east assembled today at the treas
ury department for a conference on
methods.
It is believed that the recent Pitts
burg incident. In which an examiner,
alien. -d to have been Intoxicated,
closed a solvent bank, has aroused
the treasury department authorities.
The announced purpose of the meet
ing Is to bring about closer co-operation
between the comptroller's office
and the examiners than has hereto
fore existed. anl at the same time to
establish a iniform method for the
guidance of bank officials and exam
iners. I'tidi r the present arrangement the

dependently of one another, and
each follows his own method of ex

complaints with the Oregon railroad
com mission asking a hearing to sub
stantiate the charges of alleged ex
