ment A comet. In brief. Is a bit of sime
planet which has cracked off and is
flying rapidly through space. It Is
Intensely hot. It generates enormous)
heat by Its friction going through the
ether. Every such comet, while meas
uring perhaps thousands of miles In
diameter at the head, carries with It
a sort of burning atmosphere of Its
own, which precedes It for some dis
tance an.l trails out behind It for hun
dreds of thousands of miles in length
which stretch across the heavens.
Meteorites, which are fragments of
comets have destroyed chips at sea
i and made huge holes in the earth.
Many of these have fallen in the
southwest, which seems to be a fa
! vol ite place for meteorites, and the
(desert of Arizona Is pitted with holes
j which many miners believe were
made by such visitors,

est method of assassination.

ments of the officers of the City of
Para, which arrived here today.

on a new way of accomplishing death
when they attached a wire to the

connected the other end with an In
fernal machine hidden In another part
of the room. This Is supposed to have
been accomplished during the night,
and there was nothing In the ap
pearance of the room to intimate that
sudden death had been so cunningly
prepared for the dictator.
Soon after Cabera entered the room
the telephone bell rang. Whether
the plotters had themselves called the
president's number or had left that
to chance and the ordinary routine
of the day lias not been discovered.
Answering the call, Cabrera took the
receiver off the hook and on the In
st -.nt came an explosion that shatter
ed the desk ami flung the president
against the wall. The device of the
would-be assassins had worked as
they had planned, but their victim
I escaped wan a tew oruises.
For want of a better clew the po
lice arrested five Salvadoreans on
suspicion. Their Immediate execu
tion was ordered, but the American
minister at Guatemala Intervened and
thp sentence was commuted to ban
ishment and the five were placed on
board the City of Para and taken to
Acajutla, where they went ashore.

good representative exhibits in the
carload class.
His letter in part Is:
"I will certainly enter the contest
with a carload of apples.
"It seem to me that this Is a grand
opportunity for the different apple
districts of the northwest to show
their faith In their claims of growing
superior apples.
"I think the matter should he
brought to the attention of the com
mercial clubs of the different districts
with a view of taking the matter up
and getting the best equipped grower
In each district to enter the competi
tion. "It Is certainly the best opportunity
the west has ever had of showing to
the east that we are really growing
choice apples on a commercial scale,
and at the same time convince them
that we lead the world In our grade
and pack.
"I would prefer to he In competi
tion with 25 competitors rather than
with only two or three, and If It could
be known early enough how many
cars would be entered. It could be ar
ranged to have an auction sale of the
exhibits of this class on the last day
of the show and the buyer could land
his purchase In the eastern markets
In time for the holiday trade. I be
lieve this could be worked up to be
the most important feature of the
chow and as the apples would be the
'fream of the northwest' I think they
would sell at prices never before
heard of In any country.
