IhIoii Commercial club has an exhibit
In the fruit line that la prized above
nil others. It Is a new hybrid plum,
created by Luther lsurbank, and the
first to be exhibited anywhere. It has
been sent by Mr. Burbank to the club
and he states that It has not yet been
named. The club feels honored by
the gift and If it were not that Mr
Burbank had suggested the organiza
tion was the first to be given credit
for exhibiting one of his products, he
would be asked to give It the name of
'Lewlston." It Is a hi autiful yellow
plum, much above the average size.
As to Its taste and Its quality, only
Sir. Hurt). ink knows, for the gift was
viewed as being so precious by the
club It was Immediately rushed Into
preservative and a large glass Jar by
Secretary Cook. No member had au
dacity to suggest that the luscious ap
pearing plum should be tasted.
The new fruit was received by the
club as an Incidental development to
letter sent by Secretary Cook to
Mr. Burbank asking for advice as to
a preservative for fruit In its natural
color, and Mr. Cflok made known yes
terday to the Commercial club, at the
meeting of the governing board, the'r
results of the correspondence. The
rooms hnve a grand display of pre
served fruits, admittedly the best In
the northwest, and the organization
is constantly striving even to Improve
It. Perhaps the spirit of Secretary
Cook's letter attracted the attention
of Mr. Burbank. However, the club
was rewarded not only by a friendly
response but by receipt by express of
a creation by the great Burbank, a
fruit unknown to the world.
The letter accompanying the gift
to the club was as follows:
'In reply to yours of September 4,
I would be delighted If I could help
you In the matter of preserving your
fruits. I have much trouble myself
In preserving them without bursting
or spoiling the color.
"Mr. Nichols (I do not know his
first name) whose address you can
get of the state board of trade, Fer-
rv building. San Francisco, has a se

tate him so far.

opening of the American stylo and
fashion show at 1S5 Dearborn street.

play. They were sent from all parts
of the country for the exhibition,
which many Chicago tailors assert
signifies that the nation is realizing
that the well dressed man follows the
styles accepted by Chicago.

Muskogee, Okla., Sept. 17. A scan
dal which has created a eensatlon In
the best Indian society of Oklahoma,
and which is still being discussed In i
whispers by the braves and squaws of
the redskin "four hundred," was
brought to light by a breach of prom
ise suit recently filed here. Jacob S.
Brown, a wealthy Creek Indian of
the highest social standing In his
tribe, and said to be worth $150,000,
is the defendant In the suit, which
was brought by Mary D. Taylor of
Fort Smith.
The plaintiff is a comely woman
of 34, of mixed Spanish, Arabian and
Indian blood, and claims to be a de
scendant of Pocahontas. She became
a mother last month and asserts that
the plutocratic Creek Is the father of
her child. She asks $50,000 damages
from Brown for his failure to carry
out his alleged agreement to make
her his wife.
