Announced Sunday.
Milton, Sept. IT. The withdrawal
of the M. E. church south from
church work In Pendleton and the
uniting of that body with the First
Methodist church of that city, Is the
one great subject of debate of the an
nual conference of the M. E. church
south, which is now In session In this
city.
The conference opened yesterday
with Bishop Atkins presiding. Rev.
J. Compton acts as secretary, a posi
tion he has filled with great accept
ance for the last 20 years. There are
over 70 delegates In attendance and
the church If beautifully decorated
for the occasion.
A very encouraging report from the
Spokane district was given by Presid
ing Elder J. G. Carrick, and J. D.
Crook gave a fine report from the
Boise district.
This afternoon the Woman's Mis
sionary society held a meeting, the
president, Mrs. H. S. Shangle, In the
chair. An address was given by J. R.
Pepper, president of the layman's or
ganization and a member of the na
tional board of International lessons.
He ts one of the most prominent
men In the Methodist church In the
south and comes to the annual con
ference here to address the lay dele
gates of the convention. He has al
ready visited the Montana conference
held recently In Butte and comes to
Milton en route to western Oregon
and California points where he will
sreak before several conferences.
Last night there was a great audi
ence present to listen to Bishop Ad
kin's address. Fine music was fur
nished by the choir. Rev. Dr. Lieu
alien, presiding elder of the Walla
Walla district, could not be present,
and sent a written report In which he
advocated the withdrawal of the M.
E. church south from the field at
Pendleton and uniting with the north
M. E. church. There will be much
discussion on this subject and It w ill
be thoroughly reviewed by the bishop
and probably action taken before the
clo.e of the conference.
The annual appointments will be
read either Sunday night or Monday
morning.

Freewater, Ore., Sept. 17. Oeorge
P. Sanderson, the agent at the Free
water sub-station, had his two Index
fingers badly burned yesterday by
taking hold of a live wire which he
supposed was harmless.
Fortunately there were some work
men present who liberated him as
soon as possible and he escaped with
the flesh being burned off to the
bone from his fingers. If he had
been alone nothing could have saved
him.

formed when Albert Edward came
Into his sovereignty, and under the j
terms of the stewardship they were
to take over his private debts Incur
red when he was Prince of Wales.
The history of their delicate task
would make a book of chapters pass
ing strange.
Edward desired that his obligations
be liquidated through such Interfer
ence, rather than have his popularity
with the world endangered, by begin
ning his reign with a petition to par
liament for a grant to regulate his af
fairs. It appears that when his mother's
purse failed him, Edward was helped
by his elder sister, the late empress
of Germany, who gave him strictly
private loans. As soon as she died.
Prince Stolberg, master of her house
hold, had to render an accounting of
her estate to her eldest son, the em
peror of Germany. When note of
Edward's large obligation was found
his majesty asked his English con
frere to settle up with the shortest
possible delay.
The king's committee, however,
paid the emperor forthwith, but the
diplomacy of Europe feels to this day
the Imprint of that chilling family
episode In finance.
Now It Is announced unofficially
of course, for the king's debts cannot
be bruited that every one has been
squared to the farthing, so that Eng
land at last hns a solvent sovereign.

Informed that an Incoming Atlantic
liner, due tomorrow, will bring the
ashes of the dead Insurance magnate.
Mr. Hall recently died In Lon
don, where he had gone with his
son and daughter. The body was
cremated and the children are now
returning with the ashes of their
father.
