New York, Sept. 16. Magistrate
O'Reilly was disposing of cases In the
Manhattan avenue court, Williams
burg, yesterday, when one of the
court officers stepped to the bar and
placed a box, neatly wrapped up and
tied with a blue ribbon, on the bench,
says the American.
"What's this?" said the court.
"Something for you, said the of
ficer. "It was sent to you by a lady.
She Is now down stairs In the elerk'j
office."
The woman, who proved to be Mrs.
Carrie Winsch, was called up by the
officer, and a few minutes later she
was called down by the magistrate.
The box contained c Igars. Mrs.
Winch had a case against Mrs. Eva
Hagg, who, Mrs. Winch alleged, had
insulted her.
"Madam," sternly said the nonrt
"if I accepted this bribe I would com
mit a felony and leave myself liable
to arrest and Imprisonment. Where
did you buy these cigars?"
"In a department store," muttered
the woman. "They looked good to
me."
"Well," replied the court, "they
don't look good to me, s() take them
back and never try to do a thing like
that again."
Before the case was disposed of the
two women made their peace ami thi
magistrate told them to go home.

The speedy pacer was taken over by

of him during the races.

other," retorts F. A. Seufert. the fish
king of the Columbia river, when
Master Fish Warden McAllister ac
cuses him of criminality In violating
the fish laws enacted by the people
of Oregon at the last election only
Seufert makes McAllister the blacker
criminal In effect he calls him a
thief.
The latest development In the fish
fight which Is added to the visible

built In the Argentine republic at San
Luis, on the edge of the Andean pla
teau, and here for four or five years

tion is undertaken under the direc
tion of the Carnegie institute at
Washington.
