The Klamath Watcruscrs," associa
tion is about to Inaugurate a cam
paign of advertising for the purpose
of assisting landowners under the Ir
rigation project to dispose of their
excess lands. It Is estimated that the
excess acreage? will reach about 40,
000 acres, which, according to tho
contract with the government, must
be sob within a few years.
The association Is to give publicity
to these lands throughout the agri
cultural districts of the east and mid
dle west, thereby rendering the own
ers valuable assistance In the dispos
al of the excess holdings.
The Waterusers' association has al
so practically completed all arrange
ments by means of which the land
owners under the system can take
small contracts for the construction
of laterals and portions of the canal,
taking In payment script, which Is the
equivalent of cash In the payment of
dues for water rights.
It is thought that through this plan
most of tho laterals of the system will
be built by the landowners, who all
have a few months of each year when
they are not rushed with Work on the
farm.
Many of the ranchers will construct
tho laterals that are needed on their
own lands, and others are figuring on
going Into the business on an exten
sive scale. It Is thought that by this
method the work can be done as
cheaply as by contract or by force ae-.

While railroad building absorbs the
attention In some places, wagon road
building receives thought In other
locnlltles, says a Hood River Item.
A committee was appointed at Hood
River recently to Investigate the prac
ticability of building a wagon or
auto road down the Columbia river
from Hood River to Portland.
It Is said by those who claim to
know what they are talking about,
that the road could be built as far as
Cascade Locks, but that below that
the way would be too narrow on ac
count of the railroad track and the
bluffs, more especially from the Gorge
to Bridal Veil, where there Is Just
enough room for the railroad between
the river and the basaltic cliffs that
rise hundreds of feet high.
It has been said that It would be
easier to build a road from Hood
River to near Lost Lake where a fair
