BLOW AT POOL SELUXG.
The people of Spokane are always
ready to encourage and aid a meas
ure which is for the general welfare
of the city and which attracts atten
tion to our resources, says the Spo
kane Chronicle, but they are not
ready to oppose the rassage of an
anti-gambling law, simply because
some bookmakers want races held
here wth open betting on the re
sults. The poolrooms have been put out
of business in nearly every state in
the union as pernicious and a menace
to good morals. Of all classes of
gambling there Is hardly one that is
more attractive than pool selling, and
many a young man has been ruined
and has served time In prison be
cause he embezzled money belonging
to others to satisfy his craving for)
the excitement of betting on the
"ponies." I
Spokane would be much better off;
without any race track at all, than
to have one which would depend for
its success on the open selling of
pools.

An English physician is experi
menting upon athletes with oxygen.
He believes that by reinforcing the
"wind" of track performers he will
be able to shatter many sporting rec
ords. One runner brought before him
ordinarily runs a quarter mile n 52
seconds reduced this time to 50:20
after breathing oxygen for two min
utes. Such tests are Interesting physiol
ogically. The value of the oxygen
treatment In practical use would de
pend on the point of view. If the
record Is anything to be considered
and it has to be admitted that the
modern tone with regard to races
favors this idea then the oxygen
tank must prove a beneficence In
the athletic world. On the other hand
temporarily stimulating appliances
have no place In contests intended to
try the natural or naturally cultivat
ed i-tr'-ngth and endurance of men.
Race-track rules bar "doped"
horses. Oxygen for human contest
ants is a "dope," though harmless.
The doctor's tank ranks with the
windshields of the troting course as
a purely artificial and exterior aid
to time performance. In real ath
letics the work will continue to be
done by man himself and not by an
exhilarating fluid held on tap at the
poet.

In Germany a decree has recently
gone forth allowing women the same
educational opportunities as men and
the Fatherland has been somewhat
shaken thereby. In commenting up
on the proposition the St. Louis Post
Dispatch says:
"Hausfrau" as a term means more
in German than is Implied In a liter
al translation to the English "house
wife." It stands for an institution of
ages, a glory of the empire. It ex
presses the- old German Idea of wo
man's place In the economy of affairs.
It explains the elation of the land In
the possession of an empress who has
declared her devotion to "Kinder,
Klrche and Kuche."
No ordinary national thrill Is- that
accompanying the fear that ihe haus
frau ideal Is threatened by the new
German decree granting to women
equal opportunities with men for the
higher scholastic education.
A little knowledge may be anywhere
a dangerous thing. A liberal educa
tion anywhere should be a prepara
tion, an equipment, the means to a
leslrable end, and the pursuit of such
a training should lmpiy a purpose of
usefulness. Granting such a purpose,
one really concedes the whole ense
against which apprehensive Germany
protests. It Is ridiculous to maintain
that a woman with the new ambitions
of the age should school herself in
flexibly to the role of 1i tame cat by
the sitting room fire. But It Is m
chievous when a girl comes out of
her college career, aimless Idle-h.-yiJ
ed, convinced chiefly that by culture
and association she has acquired "the
superiority of a class.
America, with Its multiplying colle
ges for women, does not find that It
has sacrificed the home-maker to the
diploma. Germany Is not likely to
love less the hausfrau of the future
if she is able to bear her part In the
talk of philosophy, literature and the
exact sciences.

finities. These decisions narrow ap
preciably the open field of historical
dispute and bear heavily on the moot
question of Papal Infallibility. We
hope, says an exchange, the Chicago
board is not through with its labors
in the interest of historical accuracy.
A world waits still in suspense to
learn beyond doubt the Identity of
the "Man In the Iron Mask" and to
be assured that, despite modern de
fenders, Richard III was as .black as
he has been painted.
Pendleton welcomes the school peo

dents. No class is more appreciated
here than they, and none Is more en

will of the people of the city.

em Kansas paper was recently asked
to report a wedding which was to oc

paper got: "Amid scenes of splendor

pose that's the way to start out) Vic
toria, the beautiful daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. J. C. Merrill (may the Lord
forgive -me), was married to Mr. Ed
ward Post. Promptly at 8 o'clock the
bride, a vision in what (I'll never do
a thing like this as long as I life )
"Of course the bride wore clothes
and there were roses and music and
things to eat; but I don't know where
to put them in. The bride's father Is
a prominent ranchman and the bride
groom is a decent young chap, which
I suppose should go In somewhere.
Please don't ask me to write up any
