San Jose, Calif., Sept. 4. With his
head blown completely from his body,
William Barker lies in tlie morgue to
day as the result of the deadly aim
of Mrs. Manuel Founts, who Interfer
ed In a quarrel between Barker and
her husband. The woman ducovered
the men In combat, and, seizing an
automatic rifle, emptied Its magazine
Into Barker's body.
She claimed aftrewards that the
shouting was accidental and that she
did not know the gun was loaded.
The tragedy occurred at the Floro
ranch on the Alviso road, near here,
where nil three were employed as
prune pickers.
According to Founts, Barker quar
reled with him as to whether they
should work on the following dny.
Barker drew a long knife and was In
the act of attacking Founts, when
Mrs. Founts appeared nnd put a fa
tal end to the fight.

the Income of that office during Au
gust. Tho sum was made up as fol

sales, $14,991.91; common school fund
principal, payments on sales of land
acquired by deed or foreclosure, $3,
206.67; common school fund inter
est, payments on certificates, $2,466.

rents and payments on sales of land
acquired by deed or foreclosure,
$214.23; swamp land fund Interest,
$45.60; swamp' land fund principal,

Receipts from sales during August
were $71,149.36, which considerably
increases the common ' school fund
principal. On August 1 the balance
in this principal was $515,638.32.
The disbursements during the month
amounted to $10,619.28, which makes
the balance on September 1, $576,
