Navy Department Is Ready to Begin
Work on New Warship. Now
Lcvlutluin Will Weigh 20,000 Tons
Government Will Do the Work
on the Florida Instead of Letting It
Out on Contract.
New York, Sept. 2. It Is likely that
the present month will witness the
laying of the keel of the Florida, the
blareest and most powerful of the
vessels of Undo Sam's navy. The
20,000-ton leviathan of the sea will
be constructed at the Brooklyn navy
yard and when completed will be the
monarch of the United States navy
and the equal In fighting power and
tonunge of any other ship afloat.
The contract to build the Florida
was given to the local yards after one
of the greatest campaigns was waged
to force Iho navy department to let
the workers of the Brooklyn navy
yard build her. Boards of trade,
congressmen, senators and every one
that could exert authority with the
Washington officials were fighting
night and day to get the' battleship
built here.
The argument of the experts In
Washington was that private builders
could construct a warship or any
other kind of vessel cheaper and
quicker than government workers.
At the time that all this was going
on the collier Vestal was started at
the navy yard. From Naval Construc
tor down to the humblest apprentice
the feeling was rampant tnat the only
thing to be done to have the ship
built here was to show good results
l.i the Vestal.
Now that the giant collier Is fin
ished and all records for quirk and
cheap construction are broken, the
men at the navy yard are
waiting I
with Interest for the keel of the Flori
da to be laid. Although the building
of a battleship Is a greater task than
the construction of a collier, the
workers at the navy yard have no
fear that they will not make ns good
a record on the Florida as they did
on the Vestal, for they have also
built the battleship Connecticut, now
the pride of the navy.
The new fighting monster Is so
much larger than the Connecticut
that the ways on which the latter was
built will have to be lengthened a
hundred feet. To do this part of a
storehouse will have to be razed, as
there Is not room for the extension of
the ways on the lan.llde. After the
building Is razed and the ways length
ened. they will be undermined so that
the railroad of the navy yard can
pass beneath them.
Another Interesting feature of the
building of the new battleship is the
fact that n new monster cantilever
crane will be erected, so the steel and
other material will be hauled to the
workers neatly twice as fast as they
were while the Vestal was being Built.
The crane Is now In course of con
struction and will be readv soon after
(lie Florida Is started.

WILL MARK STATE LINE
Information was received In Boise
this week by local civil engineers to
the effect that the government has
Inaugurated a novel boundary line
plan which In brief means that instal
lation of Iron posts at a distance of
one mile apart along the border of
the state of Idaho separating this
state from Washington and Oregon,
says the Boise Capital News.
This act of government at this
time Indicates that no action will be
taken In the future to cut the top off
Idaho, and merge It Into a new state
called Lincoln, together with a slice
of eastern Washington and northeast
ern Oregon.
At tho present time a party of gov
ernment surveyors is camping at Spo
kane Bridge, near tho panhandle
border line of Idaho and Washington,
while engaged In the work of setting
the Iron posts every mllo along the
state line. S. S. Ganneth, of Wash-'
Ington, D. C, Is In charge of the crew
and superintending the work. It Is
the Intention of the government to
set the posts but from the southern
Washington line north to the Cana
dian border.
The posts are about three feet above
the ground and nearly solid Iron,' so
that they can stand the wear of ages.
In time It Is planned to extend the
border line to the southern line of this
state and Oregon, thus perfecting a
marked distinction In the original
survey line between this state and
Its two sisters, so that there will be
no question as to where the division
line should be.
In order that the posts may be set
permanently It Is necessary that the
government engineers resurvey and
establish the lino between the states
end this Is being done as rapidly as
possible after which the posts are set
nt Intervals of a mile.
Local surveyors who havo ben In
formed of this plan of the govern
ment, have freely expressed them
selves as being heartily In favor of It
for after the posts are set the, survey
Is made permanent and there can
never, In the future, bo any question
as to where the line lays. It Is un
derstood that tho government Intends
to follow this policy on all the border
lines In the northwestern states.
THROUGH A MOUNTAIN
TO REACH HER SCHOOL
Getting to and from school In
some parts of this country Isn't as
easy as It Is In a big city, says the
New York Sun. There Is one school
teacher In Colorado, who, on stormy
days, makes the trip through a moun
tain, traveling nearly four miles un
derground before she reaches her
school.
Tho school which this teacher
teaches Is on top of a mountain near
Idaho Springs, Colo. Idaho Springs
Is a bustling place for that part of
the world, but around It on all sides
are the Rocky mountains and many
wild places.
The school law of the state pre
scribes that wherever there are 10
children there must be some sort of
a school. Up on top of this mountain
a little settlement of miners has
grown up Gilson's Gulch.
The mountain underneath It Is
honeycombed with mines. To tap
these mines there was driven what
is known as the Newhouse tunnel. It
runs into the base of the mountain

miners working In the various mines
In the mountain.
It Is a six-mile ride on horseback
from the town of Idaho Springs,
where the teacher of the school lives
up to the top of the mountain,
where her school Is. It Isn't a bad
rldo in nice weather for a Colorado
girl used to the saddle, but It's tough
In winter.
Since the opening of the tunnel the
teacher gets Into one of the little
cars at the foot of the mountain
whenever the weather is bad. The
ore train takes her Into the moun
tains about three miles. Then she
gets out at one of the mines, trans
fers to a bucket and is hoisted up a
shaft 2100 feet.
When she gets out of the shaft she
Is on top of the mountain, BO feet
from her schoolhouse. It takes about
an hour to make the trip. The
school has 14 pupils, and they never
know whether their teacher Is com
ing up from the bowels of the earth
or over the mountain.

THOUSANDS OF VETERANS
ON FOUR MILE MARCH
Toledo, o., Sept. 2. To the music of
many bands and the lusty cheers of
thousands of spectators the boys In
blue of the Grand Army marched
through the elaborately decorated
streets of Toledo today. Many dis
tinguished men reviewed the proces
sion. This evening there will be a great
electric display, covering a distance
of four miles, on the Maumee river.
A pyrotechnic display of Sheridan's
ride will also be shown tonight and
tomorrow night. Two hundred troops
w ill be required to produce the spec
tacle. The sessions of the national
encampment will begin tomorrow.
