COME TO UMATILLA.
President Roosevelt's learned com
mission for the improvement of farm
condition and the Increase of enjoy
ment and comfort in farm life is most
urgently and cordially invited to come
to Umatilla county.
This would be a typical field In
which to try- the skill and learning of
this high council. It would give them
an insight into conditions which no
easterner believes to exist.
Here are 600, 1000, 2000-acre farms
cultivated every other year and on
many of them are wells that are used
but a few weeks during harvest, re
maining for the rest of the year as
breeding grounds for typhoid germs,
malaria fever and other ills.
Few real farm homes are to be
found on many of these large areas.
School houses were long ago aban
doned. Fences ares tolerably well
kept up, but there are no signs of
real farm life, no pleasant reminders
that a home exists there'and few fam
ilies are to be found enjoying those
homes.
Men are getting rich In dollars and
cents from these farms, to be sure,
but they are impoverishing the coun
try, sapping its country pride, destroy
ing its rural institutions, making the
county a rich, yet barren waste of
wheat.
If in the superiority of their wis
dom the members of this high com
mission can suggest anything which
will counteract this tendency toward
country desolation. Umatilla county
will gladly listen to it. This is a
field worthy of a few months' study,
at least.
A FLA I XT FROM THE PEWS.
If a man wants to have the X-ray
ey of the public turned upon his in
most soul, b-t him run for office. If
he u,;nts to see his anatomy turned
Inside out, his hide stretched on a
pole to dry, his secret mind posted (
up on the bill boards and his thoughts
fiung broadcast from the house tops,
let him K' t his name on a ticket for
a public office.
1";,! i W. H. Taft became a 'candi
date f.-.r president, nobody ever asked
about " h'.s religion. In fact nobody
kne'v or cared whether he had any
rlig."n. H mattered not when he
was a judge on the bench what his
rMii-'iou belief might have been.
As bofs of the Philippines nobody
demanded to know what he believed
about the trinity, the hereafter or the
past. All that was asked was, "could
he civilize the Filipinos?"
As secretary of war and Joint dig
ger of the Panama canal his convic
tions about foreoi dination, infant
baptism, hell fire or popular amuse-j
nieiit- have not been discussed In
public. It was taken for granted
that he knew how to dig a canal and
he was allowed to proceed with the
work undisturbed.
As president of the United States
he will be guided by the same good
angels, he will pray to the same great
God of all, revere the same principles
of Justice and honor and follow the
same exact rectitude of conduct
If his religion was good enough for
the federal bench It Is good enough
for the iresldentlal chair. If It was
kooiJ enough for the war portfolio In
tlio cabinet, it Is good enough for the
private- office of president of tho
fulled Stairs. It It guided hlni
aright In his successful career In the
Philippines. It will guide him still
aright at the head of the procession.
So why this plaint from the pews?
What particular part of his religious
creed has become suddenly danger
ous for the nation?
T.ift is cuitured, educated, refined,
and broad guage and therefore with
out Inquiring further it may be taken
for granted that his religion Is all
right.
riu: little tiuxcs.
It seems to many that a president
of tho Tinted Stales is stooping from
the mighty tasks of state to a very
unimportant work when he turns from
regulation of railroads, digging can
als and directing land frauds to the
creation of a reserve for the protec
tion of the wild fowl.
Hut it is the multitude of little
tasks, the inconsequential things
which go to make up the work of
statesmen and nothing is too small
or unimportant U escape the n
otlce
of a really big man
Over in Harney, Luke and Malheur
counties In southern Oregon are hun
dreds of square miles of marshy
swamps, suitable for the breeding
grounds of myraids of wild fowl, and
one of the best things which Presi
dent Roosevelt has- ever done has
been to sign an order making this a
national reserve for the progagation
of these beautiful and useful birds.
In those thousands of acres of
riarsh, protected from the hunter
and allowed to multiply In their na
tural way, will flourish hundreds of
thousands of beautiful bird spec!
mens. There in the wilds of that
tangled marsh will be seen in a few
years myriads of colors, happy thou
sands of wild fowl, living and thriv
ing in their natural state, tame and
unafraid, a tribute to the thoughtful
ness of one good man, or perhaps a
half a dozen good men who have
been Influential in securing this Ore
gon home for the birds of the air.
This is one of the little things of a
big government which count for
something in history.
COMMONER CLEVELAND.
Of all the hetrogeneous celebrities
whom It has become my business to
meet, I have never known one as sim.
pie and unaffected as Grover Cleve-
land, says Herbert X. Casson In
Broadway Magazine. He had abso
lutely none of that veneer of vanity
which makes most great men ridicu
lous. He was the only democratic presi
dent since 1S61. and no career in nls
tory has been more triumphant and
sensational than his; yet he continued
to the last to be as simple natured
and as ready to listen to the small
talk of the people as though he had
spent his life raising chickens on a
bush farm.
The older he grew the more attach
ed be became to the simple life or
the country. Ho was fond of old
clothes and loose slippers and the soft
grassy earth. Once he told me with
great gusto how George Washington
fled to his farm from the flatteries
and Intrigues of public life.
"In 1797," he said, "when the coun
try demanded that Washington should
leave his farm and return to public
life, he squealed like a pig. He al
ways preferred his farm to the White
House."
He had no aristocratic instincts
not one. He was a commoner to th?
tore. Every man was a man to Gro
ver Cleveland. The richest individual
had no glamor and the poorest had
no smudge In his eyes. One morning,
while he was dictating an Interview,
a ragged tramp came up the path to
the house. Mr. Cleveland opened the.
door, listened to the man's story and
Kent him away with half a dollar and
a "good luck to you."
"Who Is that man, papa?" asked
iittle iJlck Cleveland, who had been
romping In the hallway.
"That is a poor man out of a Job,
nick," replied the father. "He Is a
long distance from home and he Is
trying to walk back."
WHAT WILL THEY PO WITH IT? I
All the available power and water
sites on both the Umatilla iTVcr and
McKay creek have been located with
in the past 10 days. Filings aggre
gating 80,000 Inches of water have
been placed on record on these two
streams.
Now what will they do with these
sites? Are they to be utilized In de
velopment of the country or are they
simply to be held as speculations?
Will the country at large be blessed or
cursed by thl. activity?
Will the power site. In the hands of
the locators be of any more actual
value to humanity than they were In
their natural state? We .hall see.
U.S. DISPENSATORY
Describes (he Principal Ingredients
Contained In 1'i-ru-iid.
Are we claiming' too much for Feruna
when we claim it to be an effective
remedy for chrcnio catarrh ? Have wo
abundant proof that Peruna is in real
ity such a catarrh remedy ? Let us see
what the United States Dispensatory
says of the principal ingredients of
Peruna.
Take, for instance, the ingredient
hydrastis canadensis, cr golden seal.
The United States Dispensatory says
of this herbal remedy, that it is largely
employed in the treatment of depraved
mucous membranes, chronic rhinitis
(nasal catarrh), atonic dyspepsia (ca
tarrh of the stomach), chronic intesti
nal catarrh, catarrhal jaundice (ca
tarrh of tho liver i, and in diseased
mucous membranes of the pelvio
organs. It is also recommended for
the treatment of various forms of dis
eases peculiar to women.
Another irig-tedient of Peruna, cory
dalis formosa, is classed in the United
States Dispensatory as atonic. So also
is cubebs classed a3 a stomachic and as
a tcnic for the mucous membranes.
Cedron seeds is another ingredient of
Peruna, an excellent drug that has
been very largsly overlooked by the
medical profession for th6 past fifty
years. The seed? are to be found in
very few drug stores. The United
States Dispensatory says of the action ;
of cedron that it is used as a bitter
tonic and in the treatment of dysen-
tery, and in intermittent diseases as a
substitute for quirine.
Oil of copaiba, .mother ingredient
of Peruna, is classed by the United
States Dispensatory as a mild stimu
lant and diuretic. It acts on the stom
ach and intestinal tract It acts as a
stimulant on the genito-urinary mem- j
branes. Useful in chronic cystitis, I
chronic dysentery and diarrhea, and i
some chronic diseases of the liver and j
kidneys. j
Send to us for a free book of testi
monials of what tho people think of
Peruna as a catarrh remedy. The best
evidence is the testimony of those who
have tried it.
In justice to the city of Pendleton,
which Is one of Its best patrons, the
Northwestern Gas & Electric company
should maintain an auxiliary plant lr
this city for emergencies like the
present. The city has been without
light and power for almost a week
and It Is only justice to the users of
electricity that some effort be made
by the company to meet suen emerge
ercles. Walla Witilla has been enjoy
ing a partial electric service. Pen
dleton would be glad to have only a
partial service In times of misfortune,
Eut she is certainly entitled to as
much as Walla Walla.
The Installment plan of payments
has been the making of many a for
tune for poor men. It has placed
homes and Investments within reach
of men who could secure them In no
other way and will always be consid
ered one of the genuine blessings of
the commercial world.
The Pacific Baptist says that
Protestantism would be stronger and
purer by Incorporating within Itself
the Catholic and Christian doctrine
of divorce. At present we are heath
en In this respect, and are committing
martial suicide at an alarming rate.

THE SUNDIAL.
On the sundial In the garden
The great sun keeps the time;
A faint, small moving shadow,
And we know the worlds In rime!
And If once that shadow should falter
Hy the space of a child's eyelash-
The seas would devour the mountains;
And the stars together crash.
