The Poultry Yard.
A broiler should have a full breast,
broad back and plump body.
The Ideal roasting fowl has small
bones and sinews, plump breasts,
meaty thighs and short legs and neck.
Quality brings a better price In
market than weight.
"Barbecues" hare taken a back
eat since the Introduction of the
broiler.
Kaffir corn Is a good wheat substl
tnte for poultry feeding.
A quart of soft feed Is about the
proper allowance for a dosen fowls.
One ounce of green bone for each
hen twice a week Is the proper feed
ing.
One handful of whole grain for
each fowl in the pen at night Is
about the right amount.
Stir Ripening Cream.
It Is very essential In cream ripen
ing to agitate the cream frequently
to Insure uniform ripening. When
cream remains undisturbed for some
time the fat rises In the same way
that it does In milk, though in a less
marked degree. The result Is that
the upper layers are richer than the
lower and will sour less rapidly, since
the action of the lactic add germs Is
greater In thin than in rich cream,
This uneven ripening leads to a poor
boiled cream. Instead of being
smooth and glossy, it will appear
coarse and curdy when poured from
a dipper. The importance of stir
ring frequently during ripening
should not be underestimated.
Tankage for Pigs.
One of the good things about tank
age Is that It Is a' bone maker as well
as a flesh former, says J. P. Fletcher
in Kimball's Dairy Farmer. It is ex
tremely good for the digestion, al-
ways keeping the bowels In splendid
condition and the appetite sharp. It
sometimes takes the animals several
days to become used to the peculiar
taste and smell of it, but after that all
hogs relish it. It should be fed young
pigs mixed in the slop, but for fat
tening hogs It can be fed dry in the
trough or with the soaked corn. Both
hogs and pigs are always allowed to
nm In the pasture when being fattened.
Farm Notes.
The new machine must be watched
closely and oiled thoroughly.
It does not pay to keep a runt of
any kind on the farm. Get rid of
them.
The well fenced farm will make
every field available for hogs or
sheep.
Tou are hardly a good farmer Is
the weeds get more plant food than
the crops. "
Intensive farming on a small scale
Is always safer than farming on a
large scale.
There is but one way to distribute
nitrate of soda as a top dressing on
wheat, and that Is by hand, broadcast
Dairy Note
In order to induce cows to consume
food freely It Is very necessary that
they should have palatable foods.
The more thoroughly the milk Is
cooled the finer will be the butter and
the longer it will keep.
A good milk cow always makes poor
beef, and a good cow seldom gives
enough milk to pay for her keep.
The proper amount of food Is the
greatest quantity the cow will con
sume and properly digest and ass!mlj
late.
better and quicker work than one
two-thirds full. The time will be
shorter, the butter will come better,
and the buttermilk will show less
butter fat when the churn Is not over
loaded. Economy of Silage,
The farmer must rely more upon
his own efforts to produce and pre
serve his own farm those foods that
will supply the needs of his dairy
herd. Commercial foodstuffs have
been rapidly advancing in price, and
many are now too expensive for the
dairy feeder to consider when com
piling his rations. Silage will help
take their places, and it is the most
economical feed on the farm.
Curing Seed Corn.
The man who merely desires to
cure sufficient seed for the planting
of 30 or 40 acres finds no difficulty
in securing some room In the house
which Is sufficiently ventilated and
which can be heated so as to cure
the corn. The good seed ears can
be tied together by means of binder
twine and strung on wires. Do not
use a laundry room or any room
that is not perfectly dry.
Pry Feed for Hogs.
Tests at the Indiana experiment sta
tion Indicate that pigs make better
gains when their grain Is fed dry than
they do when It Is mixed with wate.
This would suggest that those who
take the trouble to mix grain with wa.
ter before feeding waste their time
and, to a slight extent, the food value
of the grain.
Marketing Poultry.
It Is a good rule to market all stock
as soon as they can be got ready.
Poultry Is no exception to the rule.
Chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese
should be rapidly fattened and quick-1
ly sold.
Water for Cows.
Cows should have water where they
can get It when they want It. This Is
much better than watering at stated
Intervals. Xo animal that has water
always accessible will drink too much.
THE NEW TOWN OF RANGE.
Proper Amount to Churn.
The extra quart of cream over and
above the proper amount In the
churn can easily choke the machine
sufficiently to string out the work to
a wearisome length. Two quick,
easy churning are better than one
long one. A churn half full will do

the benefit I derived from the use of
Doan's Kidney Pills I con only speak
of them as being a reliable remedy
for the kidneys. I used them princi

back, which had annoyed me for some
time. The results that followed the
use f.f the first box were so benefi
cial that I continued taking them and
since that time my back has given
me but little trouble I cheerfully

Grant County Boasts a New Addition

Have you heard of the town of
Range?" asks the Long Creek Ran
ger. It Is situated in Grant county,
Oregon, between the Middle fork
and the North fork of the John Day
river on Granite creek. It is not an
incorporated town as yet, but bids
fair to be a town of the same rank
as the majority of the inland empire
towns. 0
At present It consists of a general
store with a distributing point for
the United States mall for the Gran
ite creek neighborhood. But ample
assurance Is given to the people of
