Wells' Are Going Dry.
The fanners In the Egypt country
report that, on account of the long
continued dry weather, the welle and
many of the springs are dry, and that
they are compelled to haul water for
use of house and stock. They say
that nothing like It has been ex
perlenced since the settlement of the
country, says an Item from Daven
port. One farmer said yesterday that
ho had never seen It so dry In any
country as this year, and yet he says
he has a good crop. He made the
statement that he believed there Is no
other country In the world that could
make the same showing under simi
lar circumstances.

yield will be much greater than was
expected a month ago, says the Ar
lington Record. Some fields, where
the ground was properly prepared and
the grain put In according to modern
methods,, have made an average yield,
while adjoining farms have hardly
paid for harvesting because of the
careless and antiquated methods em
ployed In seeding. Science Is taking
the place of "hit or miss" farming,
and ho who will not accept and adopt
the new order of things will be un
able to compete with his morepro

Young Indians as Carpenters.
Young Indian .apprentices will aid
In constructing the Indian day school
and teachers' cottage near Kamlah,
as O. H. Llpps, superintendent in
charge of the Nez Perce reservation,
will arrange to have the young me-
chanlcs employed when work begins
September 1. The material will be
purchased under sealed bids, but the
work wllj be done under the day la
bor plan. The young apprentices are
students in some of the many In
dian schools in the industrial depart
ment and they have considerable
knowledge of construction.
Hibrld Yields 40 Bushels.
Mark Whitlow, one of the most ex
tensive farmers In this vicinity, is
threshing 600 acres of grain, which
Is yielding 40 bushels an acre, says a
Moscow item. The wheat is of the
forty-fold and hybrid varieties, the
latter being a cross produced by the
experiment station of the Washington
State college and proving one of the
bst varieties grown here.

Flour Mill for Baker.
Charles B. Stout, the flouring milUl
man from Paoii, Indiana, will be here
a few days and will bo ready for
business, according to advices re
ceived by tho business organizations,
says the Baker City Herald.'
Construction of the new mill will
be delayed only until Mr. Stout de
cides upon the site most suitable. As
surance will be given wheat growers
as to the quantity of grain the mill
will handle, which It Is thought will
cause a larger acreage next season.
Mr. Stout has written people here
that he has ordered his milling ma
chinery for early delivery and It will
be but a short time until It will be
shipped to Baker. It is not expected
that much time will be consumed In
building the structure necessary to
house the machinery, and everything
points to a mill In operation before
many months.
