Baltimore, Aug. 19. One of the
moHt representative gatherings of col
ored business and professional men
ever held In this country marked the
opening this morning of the ninth an
nual session of the National Negro
Business league, of which Dr. Booker
T. Washington Is president.
A cordial Invitation was extended
to the visiting negroes by the official
representatives of the city, state and
colored citizens. Delegates are here
from all over the land, although the
southern states are most largely rep
resented.
The roll of visitors and their occu
pations shows thut negroes are now
engaged In nearly every business,
trade and profeswlon.
Scores of speakers will speak brief
ly before the convention and will tell
of their experiences In various lines
of business and the methods by which
they have won success. The Nation
al Negro Bankers' association, the
National Negro Undertakers' associa
tion and other bodies affiliated with
the league will hold sessions.
A novel feature will be the address
es of two colored women who have
won success as pharmacists, Mrs.
Amanda V. Gray of Washington, and
Mrs J. P. H. Coleman of Newport
News, Va. The Right Rev. I. B.
Scutt of Monrovia, Liberia, will de
liver an address tomorrow on "The
Business Development of Africa."
The city government of Baltimore
has recognized the Importance of the
convention by Installing elaborate Il
luminations along Druid -Hill avenue,
a hnndsome thoroughfare occupied
largely by negroes who own their own
homes and business establishments.
On Monday, following the close of
the Baltimore cor-'entlon, the dele
gates will go to Washington, where
they will be entertained by the Fred
crick Douglas Memorial association
with a trip down the Pototnuc. The
receipts from this outlilg will go to
the Frederick Douglas memorial home
fund.
