The Railroad Age Gazette publishes
the following Interesting sketch of
the Siberian railway:
The Russian government submit
ted to the duma the project for com
pleting the Siberian railroad accord
ing to the original plan, that Is, down
the north bank of the Amoor river to
Chaborovsk, the northern terminus of
the Ussurl railroad from Vladlvlstok,
which was the first section af the
Siberian railroad built.
This Is wholly In Russian territory
and separated from Chinese territory
(Munchurla) only by the River
Amoor. The line will be about 1100
miles long, and It is proposed to con
struct It In four years. The cost Is
said to be estimated at $110,000,000.
The line lias not yet been located en
tirely. This estimate Is vastly greater per
mile than the cost of the Siberian rail
road, though the entire route Is in a
river valley and the river has been
navigated by steamboats for many
years. There was a strong opposi
tion In the duma, but the bill passed
on the first reading by 212 votes
Against 101. This will give Russia
two lines to Vladivostok, for it con
tinues to control and work the Chin
ese Eastern railroad through Man
churia to Vladivostok, which is much
shorter than the Amoor "ljne and
through a much more fertile country.
The negotiations for rails In this
country recently reported were prob
ably for this line. Most of the rails
for the Siberian railroad were sup
plied by Russian works, which the
government protects so far as possi
ble, but transportation by rail 4000
miles or more from European Rus
sia would probably cost at least 20
a ton,, and very much more than ship
ments by sea from America or Eng
land to Vladivostok.
The building of a railroad In the
Amoor valley Is likely to give a mar
ket for Puget sound lumber. The
bridge timbers, etc., for the Chinese
The Amoor valley is wooded, but the
timber seems unsuitable for moBt rail
road uses. At least American lum
ber was taken directly up the Amoor
and its southern tributary, the Sun
garl, for the Chinese Eastern.
Ties and some other timber were
obtained also In Corea, close to the
Manchurlan border, and It ivas In con
nection with Russian forest opera
tions that the difference with Japan
began which resulted in the war. Rus
sia will not be likely to get timber for
the Amoor line from that source of
supply., There Is very little popula
tion In the Amoor valley and a rail
road In it Is not likely to be profitable
soon.

On the heels of the Fernle disaster,
In which he lost property valued at
$40,000. William Henry Melton of the
stricken city yesterday took unto him
self a wife in this city, says the Spo
kane Review.
Although he lost a fortune, Mr. Mel
ton says that he feels more than com
pensated by the turn of the blinded
goiMcfs' wheel which tossed a bride
his way.
"Well, I won't put It exactly in that
fashion." Bald Mr. Melton "Maybe I
was thrown In her way. Anyway we
met quite by chance and it has been
the salvation of me at a time of sore
distress, when I was greatly In need
of help. I felt pretty Blum and down
In the mouth when the fire swept
away In a moment what I had labored
years to nequlre, but when I met her
well, the sun shone once more. I
tell you, she was a savins Brace to me,
though her name Is Rose." Mr. Mel
ton was in the lumber business in

terday afternoon.
Mr Melton explained that the fire
had not left him entirely destitute.
"We'll have enough to begin house
keeping on, anyway, when we return
from our honeymoon," he laughingly
explained. "I wasn't like the young
man who wasn't wise enough to carry
a decent amount of Insurance. True,
I didn't carry enough, hut It will help
some now. The trouble Is that by
luss Is now being adjusted when
need ready money."

It was learned that Mr. Melton, who
whs n widower, met the Blrl of his
choice n few days after the fire. He
had come to Spokane to have his loss
adjusted. Friends Introduced him to
the young woman, who shyly (ru
ber ago as 22, and It proved to be a
case of love at first sight. The bride
la a pronounced brunette and decld
edly good looking.
Mr. and Mrs. Melton will leave for
Chicago and other eastern cities this
morning.
We intend to return to Fertile and
grow up with the town," was the way
