Wl Be Found Here This Year
Many Employed Gathering and
Fucking Fruit Forged Check on

Freewater, Aug. 3. There is an
abundance of first-class fruit In Free
water and Milton section this season
and quantities have already been ship
ped out, nearly 20 carloads already
this season of mixed fruits and vege
tables. Five carloads went out the
past week, mostly by the Milton Fruit
growers' union and the Shields Fruit
company, while X. W. Mumford of
entire lot of wheat had been sold to j the Walla Walla Produce company's
P. A. Barnes of Weston, but the loss i branch house .reports having sent out
will fall to the grower. Insurance
was carried on the grain for 50 cents
per bushel. The members of the
threshing crew and farmers near by
worked desperately to save other
grain and fields which had not been
harvested. It was through their et
forts that a greater loss was not BUS'
talned. The loss amounted to over
J 3000, which was monthly covered by
Insurance. This was the first grain
fire In this section this season

The bids for the new J20.00Q hall
to be erected at this place by the
local lodge of Odd Fellows were re
Jected, excepting one, which Is now
being considered. A meeting will be.
held this week to consider the mat
ter of accepting or rejecting this bid
The hall will be under course of con
struction this fall, but it may be
necessary to have an entire new set
of bids put up for consideration
Delightful Lawn Fete.
The lawn fete which was given at
the Columbia college campus Friday
evening by the faculty and alumni
was a most delightful affair. The
total receipt of the affair amounted
to over $45, and the money will go
toward Improvements in the furnish
ing of the college. There were var
ious booths at which refreshments
were served, and a fine program was
also carried out for the occasion
consisting of ongs, speeches and the
like. Mayor N. A. Davis made the
opening speech
A number from here went over to
"Weston to attend the funeral of the
late Hugh Walker, which was held
Thursday.
The Olinger restaurant has been
sold to Alfred Appllngton of this
city.
A great many from here have gone
to the mountains, and the Toll gate
la a very popular place for campers
from this section. There are at least
60 people from here and the vicinity
away from the country at this time
for a vacation. There will be more
away during the month.
A great number of people from
(MUton and Mcinity went over to
Meador park Saturday evening and
yesterday. A number of Walla Wal
lans were here to spend the day at
the Nichols grove, coming over on
the Interudban.

lege for the next school term, which
begins In September. . Money is also
being raised for a new college bulldr

In Washington state In the Interests
of the college, reports the prospects

Weston, Aug. 3. President and
Mrs. Robert C. French will be here
In about a week from a trip east,
when the president will make plans
to open the most successful term of
the Normal. They have been visiting
relatives in Massachusetts, and will
slop at Xew York and Newport on
their return trip.
O. M. Richmond has sold his wheat
to R. Dozier, the independent wheat
buyer, a field or J0 acres, which
yielded 22$5 sacks.
' , There are a number of campers at
Cold springs up in the mountains
from here. Some are at Toll Gate,
and various places, wheer they are en
Joying a few weeks' outing.
Morris Johns of Los Angeles, Is
visiting old friends in this section of
the country for a short time.
Harvest goes on with good results,
and as the prices are high, and prom
ise to be higher still, the farmers are
all wearing a broad smile of satisfaction.

Apples, peaches, pears, plums, cher
ries, and vegetables are being packed
and shipped at this time. Fruits are
bringing fairly good prices, and so far
the growers have made little com
plaint. The fruit Is of such good qual
ity this season that It Is believed that
prices will remain good. Blackber
ries and raspberries have been run
ning from $1.25 to $1.75 per crate,
peaches have been going at about
$1.50 to the growers. Much of the
fruit has been going to Canada, Ne
braska, the Dakotas and different
middle west states.
Late peaches and prunes will be on
in a short time, and the crop promises
to be very heavy, and of good quality.
There wil also be an Immense grape
and late apple crop.
No Tomatoes.
There will be no tomatoes In this
section of the country this year, while
last year there were tons of them
more than could be handled. Acres
of them were set out this season, but
the unfavorable weather killed the
plants when they were quite young.
Tomatoes cannot stand much wind
and cold when they are tender. This
Is the first time in years that this has
happened here.
Many Employed.
There have been a great many peo.
pie employed here this season In
gathering and packing the fruits.
There are nearly 200 people from out
side points camped about here In
tents who are spending the summer
working In the fruit and vegetables.
The Fruit Growers' Union, which re
cently completed Its big packing house
is employing quite a force of men,
women, girls and boys this summer,
and the pay roll amounts to a great
many thousand dollars during the
fruit season for the different packing
houses.
Peach Day Celebration.
The committee in charge of the
peach day celebration, which will be
held September 3, have the prellml
nary arrangements well under way,
and It will be made the event of the
season. Late peaches will be at their
best at this time, and the second an
nual peach day will be an event that
will be a credit to the country.

The I. O. O. F. lodge of this place
which recently purchased a site for
the new lodge hall, will soon begin
construction of the same, and it Is
the Intention to have It ready for use
by late fall.
Fine Office Building.
C. T. Godwin, the attorney at this
place, Is going to have one of .the
finest office buildings In the Mate, He
is building It of concrete adjoining
the Elam bank building. It will have
five large rooms, Mr. Godwin will
occupy two of them and D. Page will
Save three rooms. They will be fur
nished in the latest office style.
Forged Check,
Some unknown person forged Andy
Johnson's name to a check and pass
ed it in a Walla Walla saloon a few
days ago. Mr. JohnBon is a grocery
man here, and has no Idea who the
guilty party can be.
J. M. Labadie has just sold 10 acres
of unimproved land two miles west of
town to a Mr. Kink of Oklahoma, for
$1250. T .J. Montgomery of Franklin
county, purchased 20 acres two miles
west of the city for $2400. The real
estate dealers report several sales
pending, which will probably go
through in the next few days.
There are many campers In the
mountains from thU vicinity, and a
great many huckleberries are being
gathered.
Young Mr. Kelly, who was operated
on a few days ago at St. Mary's hos
pital in Walla "Walla for appendicitis
Is improving rapidly. He Is In charge
of Dr. Page who goes over to Walla
Walla frequently to see his patient.
This was a severe case, and Dr. Page
reports that the young man Is now
