I BEAU CARRIED OUT TO SEA.
Love for Salmon Proved Undoing for
Mr. Drain.
A huge black bear which had stray
ed from his native heath to the beach
at Astoria, In quest of fish, was car
ried out to sea Tuesday afternoon
after several vain attempts to climb
up the steep rocks at the mouth of the
Columbia .says the Portland Journal.
As related by E. G. Eckerson of the
Warren Packing company, some fish
ermen startled at the unusual appear
ance made by the huckleberry eater
In swimming with his black snout pro
truding over the surface, cried out In
fright and their yells for help were
heard by J. C. Johnson, who was out
in a fishing boat for the Warren
Packlns company.
Meanwhile the discoverers of the
unique "sea serpent" were attacking
him with boat hooks and oars and
Johnson .who had a gun, at first
could not get a shot at the bear for
fear of hitting one of the men In the
other boat. Finally Johnson circled
around until he had the bear In range
and the excited pursuers out of the
danger line and aiming carefully sent
a bullet through bruin's brain, killing
him Instantly .
The bear was pulled aboard by
means of boat hooks and only after
they had gotten him out of the water
did the fishermen know what manner
of animal he was. The unfortunate
beast measured eight. feet. The War
ren company has his skin at their
station on Sand Island, where many
visitors have viewed the trophy.
