SOCIETY OF BACHELORS"
CAUSES WORRY.
Manila, July 30. Under the inno
cent name of the Society of Bache
lors, an organization is being formed
in the province of Balacan that Is re
garded by many of the Americans in
the islands as foreboding trouble.
At the head of the new band is
Governor Sandlco, a Filipino of great
popularity and a former picturesque
leader in the rebellon ot the natives
against the possession of the Islands
by the American forces. Since that
time Sandika has been forgiven, and
to the surprise of many his election
as governor of the province was ap
proved by Governor General Smith.
But even yet, Sandiko is regarded as
a wily individual and the Insular offi
cials keep one eye on him most of the
time.
The organization is growing very
Tapidly and has a membership of
nearly 4,000, although it has been in
existence but a short time . The ob
ject is said to be "fraternity among
its members, but Its organization
closely resembles that of the Katlpu-
nan society, which once bred so much
trouble in the iMands. Its meetings
are secret, affording ample oppor
tunity for fervid speeches for inde
pendence. When Governor General Smith was
Interviewed regarding the Society of
Bachelors, he said he attached little
importance to the report of the or
ganization. It Is believed, however,
that the society Is worrying him mor
than he cares to admit.
"I believe there is some such or
ganization ln Bulacan province," he
continued, "and the way I explain its
rise Is that Governor Sandlka has
socialistic Ideas, and his organization
of the young men of his province may
be for the spread of such doctrines."
Echo, July 31. The Western Land
Ac Irrigation company whose lands
were formerly owned by the Hinkle
Ditch company, are enlarging their
Irrigation ditch west of town, begin
ning at a point near Walton Brothers

Butter creek, a distance or over six
miles. This work Is being done by
the Newport Construction company.

tween the Echo and Heppner teams
last Sunday, the Echo boys won by
a score of 24 to 5, breaking up at the
seventh Inning on account of some
misunderstanding.

ears experience.

FAMILY RECXIOXS.
Scores of Families Gathering In East
ern Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia, July 31. The family
reunion season m eastern Pennsylva
nia Is now on and scores of family or
ganizations, some of them duly in
corporated and with thousands of
members In all parts of the country,
have held or will soon hold big gath
erings in the vicinity of Philadelphia,
Doiens of families trace their origin
to early settlers In Pennsylvania and
no other state In the Union can boast
of such "gatherings of the clans.
One of the largest of these bodies
Is the Hoover Family association,
which has hundreds of members, who
for many years have met annually
to pay their respects to the venerable
former Judge Hiram G. Hoover, usu
ally known as "Grandpa" Hoover, the
chieftain of the clan.
Ranking among the largest asso
ciations in the state Is the Baer Fam
ily association, of which George F.
Baer, president of the Reading rail
way system, is a member. The his
tory of this family Is traced back 265
years, to the arrival of the first Baers
In this country. The annual reunion
Is usually held In Kutztown Park,
near Reading, early In August.
Another large family Is that of the
Bergey Family association the de
scendants of John Ulrlch Bercy, a
German pioneer, who came to the
United States about 1717, and settled
In Montgomery county. The Bergey
clan has since that time numbered
more than 6000 people of whom about
2000 are now living and are members
of the Bergey Family association.
Of German ancestry, the members of
the Bergey family are, almost to a
unit, thrifty, careful, intelligent people.
When the Gehmans get together
at Perkasie Park each year the widely
scattered branches of that clan are
best shown when it Is known that
the reunion has regular attendants
each year from Michigan, Iowa, Colo
rado, Virginia and that members in
far ofr Switzerland always send let
ters or cable messages to be read to
the other members of the family.
The Carroll Family association: the
Williams Family association, which
met In Hatboro; the Rosenberger
family; the Speare Family association.
with most members living in Mont
gomery and Chester counties; the
Moyer Family association; the asso
ciation composed of descendants of
Rev. William Thomas, a prominent
Welsh minister who lived In Bucks
county, after coming to this country
In 1712; the Gottschall Family asso
ciation, one which traces its ancestry
to a time preceding 1700; the De Pre
fontalne Family association, whose
ancestry goes back to the time of the
Huguenots; the Rchlerer Family asso
ciation all these and perhaps half a
score of others had their origin In
eastern Pennsylvania and annually
add to the Joyousness of the summer
reunion season.
