IN 22 MINUTES
PILLSBURY'S FAMOUS
RECORD IS BROKEN.
Waitsburg Breaks World Record for
Quick Flour Making Wheat Is Cut
Hauled, Ground and Baker Into
BtacuJta in Twenty-Two Minutes.
Plllsbury may have been there with
the time record for an easterner when
It came to getting standing grain from
the field to the mill and thence to the
bakery, with a record of (1 minutes,
but westerners have the record brok
en In a doaen different ways, and
Waitsburg has the honor of carrying
off first prlre, for in an attempt made
yesterday afternoon to break the east
ern record, growing grain was har
vested, taken to the Preston-Parton
mill, ground into flour and made Into
bread and biscuits In the short period
of 22 minutes, says the Walla Walla
Bulletin.
The experiment was an Interesting
one from every point of view, but one
of the main features displayed by the
breaking of the eastern record, is the
value of automobiles In connection
with farming In the west. As soon
as the grain had been cut and sacked
it was loaded Into Mr. Preston's auto
mobile and bowled off to the mill,
where the transformation took place.
The test to break the eastern time
had been considered for some time
and a large number of Waitsburg peo
ple, as well as Walla Wallans. were
present, a number of them having
been photographers for newspapers
and magazines of the state. Edgar
L. Smith, of the Up-to-the-Tlmes staff
was among those present.
The record of Plllsbury has occa
sioned much comment since Its estab
lishment as It has been extensively
used In advertising a special brand
of flour manufactured in Minneapo
lis, but to the Preston-Parton mill of
Waitsburg is due the honor of having
transformed growing grain Into de
licious bread and biscuits In the al
most unbelievable short period of 22
minutes.
plums growing and this morning he
said that between 60,000 and 60,000
varieties are ripe now. As the fruit
ripens the plums, are tested, this be
ing a very Important part In Bur
bank's great work of making fruits
and flowers produce their best The
product of each tree Is being tested
and. a a result of this Investigation
Mr. Burbank will determine whether
further time shall be spent with those
varieties that are apparently not
worth while.
Some people will imagine, when
they read the statement that Luther
Burbank has 800,000 different varie
ties of plums that his orchard must
cover a wide area. This ts not so, for
one tree, when grafted, will bear
scores of varieties of plums.
INK OX SUMMER TOGS.
Inktlironver Turns Attention to San
j Francisco Dandles.
San Francisco, July 23. The Ink
thrower who has been keeping fash
ionably dressed women on Van Ness
avenue In terror by ruining
their costly gowns with splashes
of writing fluid. seems to
have turned his attention to the men
for the time at least. Men who wear
fancy summer suits of light colors
have been his victims for the past two
' days, and more than One dandy
mourns the ruin of his pet pair of
light trousers. '
Lens Pelser, who suffered from the
Inkthrower last night, says he was
riding on the platform of a Market
street car upon which also rode two
small -boys and an old man of (0
years. When he alighted his trous
ers were bespattered with Ink. He
thinks the old man Is the criminal,
for whom a dozen detectives are
looking. '

Jewelry Protection
"The ge ar il nubile Is uot aware of the
carefully worked out system by which
the large Jewelry bouses continue to
protect tbelr splendid wares long after
these bare been sold and passed out
of their hands," said a detective,
discussing daring modern burglaries.
"Most large establishments dealing in
precious metals and gems bave a care
fully organized and very efficient de
tective system, whlcb makes it easy
for a patron to recover stolen goods
without charge and with little or do
delay in the institution of the search.
In the safes of these large jewel bouses
are minute descriptions of every piece
of valuable jewelry which goes out
from the establishment. Each piece
is numbered too. When the gems are
missed the patron telephones the shop
In whlcb the' articles were purchased
At once a special detective, thoroughly
acquainted with the business in band
and armed with a detailed description
of the Jewelry;- is hurried to the scene
of action. This Is without expense to

Something Hotel Clerks Remember,
"There's lots less danger of the
night clerk forgetting an early call
left by some guest than most travelers
imagine," remarked a hotel manager
the other day. "The fact Is," he de
clared, "the average night clerk could
not forget one of those early calls If be
wanted to. You know, It's a mighty
lonesome Job the night clerk has.
There is little for blm to do, few ar
rivals to take care of and little to
break the monotony of his long vigil.
About the only fun the night clerk
has is those early morning calls. Wben
I was a night clerk I used to count
the hours until I could start in on
those early calls. There was nothing
else to do or think about, and It would
keep going through my mind what fun
it would be to make some guest share
my forlorn state by getting blm out of
bis warm bed all sleepy eyed. I could
not any more bave overlooked one of
those early calls than I could bave
overlooked my breakfast when the
time came.H-CIeveland Plain Dealer.

A Woman Governor.
Queens bave ruled many nations, but
Pennsylvania Is the only one of tbe
United States that ever bad a woman
for governor. A passage unearthed
from Armor's "Governors of Pennsyl
vania," page 126, says:
On the 30th of July, 1718, William
Penn died, at the age of seventy-four.
By his will his wife, Hannah, was
made his Bole executrix and assumed
the management of colonial affairs, ex
ecuting this difficult task with rare
tact and business capacity. 'She be
came,' says Watson, 'in effect our gov
ernor, ruling us by ber deputies or
lieutenant governors during all the
term of her children's minority.' "

Lion and Unicorn.
The animosity . wbicb was supposed
to exist between tbe Hon and the uni

"Faerie Queene," Is allegorical of the
deep rcoted ill will which anciently ex

Ever since 1003 the royal arms have
been supported, os now, by the Eng

token of tbe fact that St George and
