A. F. Potter, chief of the branch of
grazing, United States forest service,
left Washington Thursday, July 16,
for Santa Fe, N. M. The first object
of his trip is to confer with Governor
Curry, July 22, with regard to the
propowd additions to the Pecos na
tional forest
An examination of the withdrawn
land will be made for the purpose of
determining what part of It shall be
added to the national forest and what
part released. It is expected that
this examination will take about 10
days or two weeks.
On the first of September, Mr. Pot
ter and D. D. Brenson, of the forest
fcervice. will start from Phoenix, Ariz.,
to make an examination of the land
within the Verde national forest, for
the purpose of making recommenda
tions regarding the regulation of
grazing. These forests were created
primarily "for the purpose of securing
favorable conditions of water flow,"
so that special care will need to be
exercised to prevent grazing from de
feating this object
An agreement has been made be
tween the secretary of the Interior
and the secretary of agriculture, for
Investigations of the effect of the
grazing of sheep and goats upon the
watersheps .within national forests
which are Important to irrigation. Mr.
Potter and Mr. Bronson will, there
fore, co-operate In these investigations
with officials of the reclamation serv
ice. Plncliot Will Co-operate.
GIfford Plnchot, forester, has writ
ten to the Waterusers' association and
to the presidents of both the Cattle
growers and Sheepgrowers' associa
tions In Arizona, informing them of
the proposed examination and invit
ing them to arrange to have repre
sentatives of their several interests
accompany the representatives of the
government. If they desire to do so.
Investigations of the relation of
stock grazing to water supply on other
national forests will be carried on
Jointly by the reclamation service and
the forest service wherever complaints
are received from the waterusers of
damage to the water by stock. In
vestigations will also be made by the
government on its own initiative
whenever such action is necessary for
the general welfare.
The results of these Investigations
will be made known as rapidly as
possible.

Half Million Trout Fry.
To transport 600,000 fish fry from
the state fish hatchery at Hay Spur,
Blaine county, to the trout streams
and lakes of north Idaho, Is the object
of a visit to Pocatello of Chief Depu
ty State Game Warden B. T. Living
ston, who arrived yesterday from Sho
shone to arrange with the Short Line
for the fixing up of a baggage car to
carry the young trout to the northern
waters, says the Pocatello Tribune.
Through the kindness of D. K. Bur
ley, general passenger agent of the
Short Line, who was in Pocatello yes
terday with the Garfield party, orders
were given to the shops to fit up a
car according to Mr. Livingston's In
structions. A large tank for aerating
purposes will be Installed and the in
terior of the car rearranged, to suit
the necessities of the shipment.
The work will be completed about
tomorrow and the car will then be
taken to the Hay Spur hatchery to be
loaded with 500,000 or more trout fry.
These will be shipped through by fast
train In the shortest possible time'
and will be planted in Hayden lake,
Fish lake, lake Pend d'Orlelle, and in
other streams and lakes. : Two varie
ties of trout will be planted lake
and brook.

Greatest Runners to Participate.
London, July 21. With the inter
national Olympic Marathon run but
three days away, Interest In the event
is at a white heat and many wagers
are being made on tho result. There
is no doubt that the contest will be
the greatest of Its kind in the world's
history. Seventy-two of the worlds
best distance men, representing sev
enteen nationalities, will engage in
Friday's struggle for supremacy. The
course Is in good condition. It covers
a distance of twenty-six and one
third miles, with the start in Windsor
Great Park and the finish at Shep
herds Bush Stadium, the scene of
last week's Olympic games. The
course abounds in twists and turns,
varying in distance from a matter of
yards to one of miles.
One of the most interesting con
testants in the race will be Tom
Longboat, the phenomenal Canadian
Indian runner. Of the seventy-two en.
tries, only five took part In the race
at Athens two years ago, notably Jo
seph Forshaw of America John Svan
berg and O. Thornos of Sweden,
George Blake of Australia and A.
Coutonlakls of Greece.
Swede Expects to Win.
On that occasion Svanberg distin
guished himself by making a good
second to Billy Sherrlng of Hamilton,
Ont, his time being two hours 58
minutes 20 4-5 seconds, and as he
finished strong then he may be relleo
upon to get the course this time for
a certainty. Tornos, the other Swede
came in fourth,, so he, too, may be
expected to do something. Blake
made sixth place, and it will be re
membered that it was the Antipodean
who made the pace such a cracker as
the men dashed from the village of
Marathon, and he was in the lead at
15 miles and looking like a winner
when he suddenly blew up.
Coutonlakls, the Greek, finished in
11th place. Just in front of Forshaw,
who la expected to do much better
this trip, as he is stronger, and has
the advantage of two years' extra
training.
Though a number of the prospec
tive runners are unknown to fame in
America they hold records In their
respective countries.
Dorando Pletrl. the leading Italian
nomination for the event. Is said to
be a flier and to be possessed of ex
traordinary stamina. He is a native
of Capri and has' been preparing for
the race since the idea of holding the
games in England was made knowv
J. G. A. Lundberg, who will be a
good team mate for Svanberg the
Swedo, is a conslstant performer for
the Marathon, as he holds the Swed
ish record for 2 hours 40 minutes 10
3-5 seconds.
Nleminen, the only entry from
Finland, has a record of 2 hours 44
minutes 20 3-5 seconds for the 25
mlfes.
H. Muller. the foremost German
candidate, has no known record for
he Marathon, but he has done good
work un to 10 miles and thereabout,
and he has done a lot of pretty fast
road walking.
Undoubtedly tho two best men on
the English team are . F. Appleby,
holder of the 15 mtle amateur rec
ord, and who Incidentally took the
measure of the great Shrubb in that
very same race, and A. Duncan, the
present four and 10 mile champion
