The Potato Onion.
J. A. Mock, who now owns a well
kept little place of several acres on
Preston avenue, has been raising
what he calls the potato onion for
the past three years, which Is quite
a novelty la this country at least, says
the Waltsburg Times. The onion Is
of excellent quality, selling at an
average of 3 cents per pound and Is
a tremendous producer. Three years
8B0 Andy procured a few sets at
quite a. high price. Besides raising
enough for his own use he planted
last vear a uatch 12x110 feet less
than 1-16 of an aero, from which was
nroduced 1000 pounds or onions, inis
year he has In about a quarter acre.
Figuring the yield the same as last
year on an acre, at 3 cents makes a
total of $480 per acre.
A necullar thin about tnis variety
of the onion Is that the sets grow
underground with the onion. One
onion set planted in the spring pro
ducing a cluster of onions and nu
merous sets.
The samnle we have on exhibition
In our iifflr.i has In the cluster five
largo onions and 16 onion sets, all
produced from a Mingle sot planted
In the spring.
Hurt In Runaway.
J. S. Route-hens' buggy team be
came frightened while hitched to a
70-pound tying block In front of the
postofflce Tuesday afternoon and ran
away, carrying the hitch block with
them as though It was so much paper,
say the Waltuburg Times. No dam
age was done the buKKV but one horse
cut a front leg badly In some man
ner. A team being driven by Will Harris
became somewhat unmanageable as
the runaway team dashed up the
street, and before they could be
quieted, a stranger who has been
waiting for harvest here, and was
standing watching the runnway, was
struck In the side with the tongue of
the Harris hack, with the result that
three ribs were found to be broken
when he was carried to a surgeon.
Considerable sympathy Is expressed
for the unfortunate man a,s he Is a
poor man with a family and will be
laid up for several weeks at least.
. Oregon Sheep Are Clean.
Of the 2,26,055 sheep In the state

the Pacific Homestead. The diseased
ones were all dipped twice under the
supervision of a federal Inspector and
all exposed sheep were dipped pnee.
This was done between February 1
and July 1, and on the 1st of Sep
tember another Inspection of all the

The state board of pardons conven
ed for Its quarterly session nt 9
o'clock this morning In Its new head
quarters In the administration build
ing, Just recently completed at. the
Washington state prison, says the
Walla Walla Bulletin. Owing to the
amount of business to be transacted
it Is not likely that the board will be
able to finish its. work this week and
It will require three months or more
to complete the work. Nearly all of
the scab now existing Is In Lake and
Malheur counties, with a few small
flocks In Douglas county thus affect
ed. This Is a very desirable change
In the condition of Oregon's sheep to
what It was a vyear ago when nearly
17 per cent were afflicted with scab-btes.
IJlg Trust Deed Filed.
Yesterday there was filed In the
clerk's office a voluninlous document
of 24 pages, which was a trust deed
covering the property of the Eagle
Valley railway for the sum of $350,
000, says the Baker City Democrat.
The deed was to secure this sum to
the Metropolitan Trust & Saving.)
Bank of Chicago, This matter of de
tail completed we look for the work
on this splendid feeder to Baker being
pushed forward at once.
The property deeded Is the right of
way for a railroad beginning at Ba
ker City and extending in an easterly
direction to the town of Richland,
being a distance of 50 miles more or
les.s.
The deed is for the purpose of
mortgage bonds and under the mort
gage the railroad Is to be under con
struction within 60 days from the time
of the execution of the mortgage.
Time to Spray.
, Time for spraying for the second
brood of codlin moth will commence
Monday morning according to a state
ment of County Fruit Inspector C. L.
Whitney, who says the work of ex
terminating the peats will have to be
very thorough this time. says, the
Walla Walla Bulletin. This will be
the third spraying this year, and Ts
one of the most Important outside of
the first. The compound to be used
this time Is three pounds of arsenate
of lead to 100 gallons of water.
Prof. Trumble, formerly of the
Washington State college, Is In the
city and will do much of the spray
ing over the county, farmers having
engaged him for the work. Mr. Whit
ney says the fruit over the county is
looking fine, and if It Is sprayed
properly should turn out well.
On One Farm for 44 Years.
The 30 acre ranch of William
Dobbs & Son was sold last week to
Mr. Hunter of La Grande, for $6500,
says the Union Republican. Mr,
Dobbs has occupied this place for 44
years and feels the noed of a change
of climate. The tract Is one of the
finest and best kept In this section,
and the new owner certainly has a
pnre in that line. Mr. Dobbs and
son have not yet fully decided what
tney win do or where they will go.
will then necessarily be compelled to
hold over until Monday.
Fully 130 cases will occupy the at
tention of the board durln Its ses-
'sion. Included In this number are
the applications for pardons and p.i
rols. Interviews with Individual con
victs and the consideration of final
discahrges.

HENRIETTA MILL WILL RUN.
Echo Will Manufacture Flour In
Large Quantities.
The report has been circulated re
cently that the Henrietta mills would
not run this coming year, but the ru
mor Is without foundation, says the
Echo Register. The mill will run
steadily this coming year.
Mr. Daughtrey and Mr. Murphy
have secured the services of Mr.
Thomas, an experienced miller, who
several years had charge of the De
ment Bros.' mill at Walla Walla, and
the pnst year has been running a
mill In China. Mr. Thomas Is now
on his way from China to take
charge of the Henrietta mills.
The new company will make ex
tensive Improvements to the property
and add many new features to the al
ready complete plant.
Construction of the new fire proof
alfalfa mill building is In progresi,
and the mill will be finished In time
to handle this year's crop of alfalfa.
