H.VSKIX WRITES OF
THE PANAMA CANAL
"E. C. DeWitt & Co., Chicago, III.

Frederick J. Haskln writes the fol
lowing entertaining letter concerning
the Panama canal for the Oregon
Daily Journal. He has visited Pana
ma and personally Inspected the ca
nal and writes as follows:
iThe Isthmian canal project natur
ally divides Itself into two parts. At
the two ends they are simply digging
big ditches 45 feet deep and 500 feet
wide, which will have the same sur
face level as the ocean itself.
On the Atlantic side this big ditch
starts at deep water In Llmon bay
and extends inland seven miles to
Gatun. On the Pacific side it starts
at deep water and extends to Mlra
flores, a distance of five miles.
From this it will be seen that ap
proximately one-fourth of the whole
canal will be a big sea level ditch.
For the remaining 38 miles of the
canal It Is necessary to have the sur
face of the water 85 feet higher than
that of fie sea level ends of the canal
In oru. r tn get ships safely across the
big continental divide nt Culebra
To get this the engineers have plan
ned a grr.it dam at Gatun, on the
Atlantic side, and two relatively small
er ones at the Pacific side, one at
Pedro Miguel, called by the Ameri
cans "Peter Mcum, and tne otner
at Mirafiores. These dams will make
a vast !:i!u shnped something like a
gourd, v. th the little end at ' Perdo
Miguel, the handle being the Cule
bra cut.
The topography of the isthmus
lends itself admirably to the plans of
the engineers. The Chagres river
flows more than half way across the
isthmus, along the general line of
the canal, crossing the line of the big
ditch 23 times on its way to the sea,
without the canal ever going out ol
its way to meet the river. All of
these crossings will of course be elim
inated when the dam is completed,
and with all of its windings, the
Chagres will not be able to wind out
of the big Gatun lake.
Site of tlie Dam.
The Charges flows down through a
valley which gradually widens as It
nears the sea. At -Gatnu this valley
is about a mile wide. It terminates
entirely here, and the hills which
form it lose themselves In a castal
plain. It Is across the valley at this
point that they are building the Gat
nu dam and Its accompanying locks,
This dam will be a veritable moun
tain of mud more than a mile long
In the ana a naif mile wide at the base. It

Headed by Conrad Krebs, local
hopmen will gather at a mass meet

whereby the ban will be placed on all
liquors except beer, says the Salem
Journal.
It la claimed by hop men and
many leading people throughout the
country that It is whisky, cordials and
such drinks, which are the cause of
drunkenness and the hue and cry
against the saloon.
It Is not known as yet whether any
of thp prohls will take part In the
meeting or not, but it Is very likely
there will be some representatives
present to look broadly at the question.

taking from its murky waters such
toll as Uncle Snm and the commerce
of the world may exact. This toll
will be big enough to fill the largest
artificial ake in the world a lake
whose water surface area will be
about 16a square miles.
After the .Chagres and its smaller,
neighbors have filled the lake to the
required height the dam will allow
the rest of the water to pass through
Its spillway and on to the sea, with
out further interruption, the only de
mand being that it shall not approach
the line of the canal again. In other
words, its vagrant waters will be sen
tenced to the canal workhouse and
when that Is filled to overflowing,
they will be Invited to "leave town"
at once by the spillway route.
