Pilot Rock, July 13. Harvesting
the wheat and barley crop In the Pi

Binders, headers and combined har
vesters have been running for some
time. A great deal of the grain has
been cut for hay, and there will be
less to thresh than usual, though a
greater part of what is being threshed
will come up to the regular standard.
The Umatilla Central is taking spe
cial precautions in regard to grain
fires, along the right of way of the
railroad. A man has been added to
the train crew to keep watch for all
trouble of this kind. Barrels of wa
ter are being carried and every pre
caution is being taken.
Mr. and Mrs. J. p. McManus have
been at Hidaway for a short vaca.
tion.
Sells New Barley.
The first new grain sold in Pilot
Rock was sold by John Blanchert,
consisting of 200 sacks of barley. It
was sold to the chop mill at 90 cents
per hundred. It is thought that prices
will be high enough this season to
offset the shortage in the crop.
Mark Sturtevant has gone to his
former home in North Dakota, where
he expects to remain during the sum
mer months.
A great many camping parties are
paslng through dally on their way to
the springs for a summer outing.

day celebration of Orangemen's Day,
which falls on Sunday, was com
menced In Belfast today. It is esti
mated that 100,000 Orangemen are
participating In the merrymaking.
Extra police are on duty and troops
are held In waiting at their barracks
but no serious trouble is anticipated.
BASEBALL NOTES.
The Pittsburg climate must agree
with Roy Thomas. Since leaving
Philadelphia Roy has shown most
beautiful baseball.
And while figuring up the National
league race don't overlook the New
York Giants. The Torkers have been
going great the past month.
Manager Murray of the Philadel
phia nationals is having more trouble
than a Judge at a baby show in trying
to keep his "Quakers" awake.
"Slugger" Johnson of the Portland,
Ore., team Is a real hitter. A home
run, a three-bagger and two two-base
hits In a recent game show that
Johnson knows how to pick out a
good bat.
Major league scouts are getting
fussy. A majority of the scouters
say they haven't seen a minor leaguer
this season worth a try-out with the
big fellows.
Just when Manager Chance had
everything nicely arranged for his
Chicago Cubs to lead the procession
all season those horrid Pittsburg Pi
rates steped In and spoilt It all.
The New York Highlanders have
not improved under the management
of "Kid" Elberfeld. It is hard to be
lieve that a team made up of so many
star players could play such poor ball.
Several youngsters have been do
ing nice work on the diamond this
season, but when It comes to the gen
uine star performers on the slab be
sure to place an X after the names
of William Donovan of Detroit and
William Dlneen of St. Louis.
Manager McGuIre of the Boston
Americans says he-Is mighty glad
President Navln of Detroit refused
to give a nickel for "Old Cy" Young.
"Suppose Navln had flashed the
coin." says Jim, "and in a fit of reck
less abandon I had taken him on. O
cracky!"
Boston has another Tom McCarthy.
The original Tom was a star fielder,
while the present Thomas is a pitch
er who has made good with the Bos
ton Nationals.
