gists In their campaign literature
during the recent election. For the
unjust and slanderous articles and
pictures sent out during the cam
paign the druggists have adopted
some retaliatory measures and they
say they will be effective.

A. C. Koeppen returned home this
morning from Long Beach, where he
attended the annual session of the
state druggists' association. He says
that the meeting was a highly enjoy
able one and much Important busi
ness was transacted.
Being the only druggists in attend
ance from this county it devolved up
on Mr. Koeppen to let the pharma
cists know that Pendleton was on the
map and he did so. Re had hoped
to persuade the convention to come
here next year, but it is doubtful If
such can be done. The task of se
lecting the next meeting place was
left with the executive committee and
It is thought the meeting will go to
southern Oregon.

Danger of Grain Fires Causes Ban to
Be Placed on Sport.
Vigorous complaints are being made
against toy balloons at this time of
the year because they are dangerous
from a fire starting standpoint Sev
eral grain field fires have already
been caused by balloons though they
were always found, fortunately In
time to prevent serious conflagrations.
Today the attention of the mayor
and chief of police was called to the
practice of sending up toy balloons
and Mr .Murphy asks that the sport
be given up by the boys. Should the
request not be complied with strin
gent steps will be taken to stop It

Walla won from Pendleton In the
twilight game yesterday. That the
evening game idea was a good one
was shown by the attendance, for it
was thp largest crowd that has wit
nessed n week day game here this
year.
No scores were made during the
first five innings and the game be
longed to either side until the finish.
The winning runs came In the ninth.
The feature of the game was the
sensational catches by Harmon, Wal
la Walla's left fielder.

Dr. Parker Secures Rooms.
Dr. E. O. Parker, formerly of Pilot
Rock, has rented the rooms In the
John Schmidt building formerly oc
cupied by Mrs. Lewis Hunter and is
fitting them up for offices for the
practice of his profession in this
city. Dr. Parker has long desired to
move to Pendleton and is delighted
with the city. He has been at Pilot
Rock for a number of years and has

profession here.

selves are going to make an active
fight against any of the profession
whe violate the prohibition law and to
this end a committeeman is to be
named for each county.
It will be the espeolal duty of this
committeeman to observe conditions
in his county and to assist the dis
trict attorney in prosecuting any
drugglrt guilty of violating the law.
Mr. Keeppen will very likely be the
committeeman for this county.
Furthermore, the druggists are
planning to hare the state board as
sist them rn their movement by mak
ing a rule that will mean the taking
away of the pharmaceutical license
from any droggist who violates the
law.

W. D. . Kelson and F. S. Schmidt,
proprietors of the Haines Record, of
Haines. Baker county, are In the city
this afternoon on their way to Milton
on a business trip. They are pleased
with the appearance of Pendleton
and were surprised to find any of the
town left from the slanderous reports

TROUBLE BREWING.
May Be Things Doing in Panama at
Tomorrow's Election.
Panama, July 11. On the eve of
the presidential election here there
are disturbing signs which are fear
ed by cooler heads among the poli
ticians will result in bloodshed and
will probably force the United States
to take a hand In the local govern
ment.
While upon the surface there is lit
tle sign, a storm is raging beneath
and an outbreak promises to bo more
fierce because pent up.
Members of both parties are mut
tering threats and trouble Is almost
certain despite the fact that nearly
600 United States marines have been
landed to keep the peace.
General J. D. Obaldle will probably
be elected president.
Dr. Ricardo Arias is Obaldla's op
ponent. Obaldla accuses President
Amador of overlooking wholesale
graft in public affairs.

Dr. Henry W. Coe, head of the col
onlzatlon work on the Furnish-Coe
project, came up from Portland with
the Garfield party yesterday. He was
with the secretary during his stay
here and returned to Portland on
train No. 1 this afternoon.
On Fishing Trip.
Attorney Charles H. Carter, G.
La Dow. Cress Sturgis and C. K.
Cranston, left this morning for Uklah
where they will fish in the streams
in that vicinity for several days.
Holdman Man Whipped Boy.
A warrant was sworn out today In
the justice's court at Holdman for
the arrest of Bob Beavert, charged
with whipping a boy named Hoyt

. This evening another twilight gams
will be played, commencing at 4:11
and Taliaferro will do the pitching

Tomorrow afternoon the closing
game of the series will be played and

for Pendleton this year. According
to Manager Dean Tatora he will like
ly disband the team after tomorrow,
though there Is a possibility that the
team will go to Baker City for a se
rles.
The game tomorrow afternoon will

LABOR LEADERS SERVED.
Made Defendants in Suit for Dnmngrs
as Result of Strike.
Denver, Col., July 11. While con
ferring upon a labor matter today,
,the heads of the American Federation
of Labor were served with papers re
quiring them to appear as defendants
In a suit brought by the E. II.
Thompson Marble company. Gom-
pers, John Mitchell, John B. Lennon
and Max Morris were among the lead
ers served.
Alleging the men served were re
sponsible for the strike at the marble
works, the company demands 350,000
damages. The plaintiffs recite they
last that amount through the suspen
sion of business.
The company says It paid union
wages and employed union men.
The trial will be In August.

Portland, July 10. Portland and
San Francisco played 13 Innings with.

O.Connell called the game on account
of approaching darkness, although it
was still a long way off. It was
great game from start to finish with
sensational fielding In nearly every
Inning. It was Garrett's first game
since recovering from the mumps. He

A great crowd collected as Munger

made an address of welcome at the
ceremonies on the occasion of the re
turn of John W. Kern the democratic
nominee for vice-president. This Is
taken to mean the republicans of In

Fairbanks' friends in the republican
convention at Chicago, when Gover
nor Hanlln was hooted when he plac
ed Fairbanks In nomination will be
carried out

was second with 2494, and Canada

from an unofficial count and the fig

Idaho Town Dry.
A special to the Lewlston Tribune
from Troy, Idaho, says: The city
council by a vote of three to two, de
cided last night that no more saloon
licenses will be Issued in Troy. This
means that Troy will enter the "dry"
list on December 24, next, the date
that the licenses for the two existing
saloons expire. The agitation against
the saloons here has been In progress
for some time and on one occasion a
delegation of women went to Moscow
to appear before the board of com
missioners and protest against the Is
suance of any licenses in the Troy
precinct. With Moscow and Troy
closed, Genesee, Kendrick and Jullct-
ta will be the only towns in the coun
ty where liquor Is sold.
Lumber Yard at Pilot Rock.
T. O. Tates, who has been connect
ed with a lumber yard In the Palouse
country, Is looking the field over here
with a view to establishing a lumber
yard at this place, says the Pilot
Rock Record.
He owns a farm a few miles from
Pilot Rock and Is well acquainted
with the needs of the people here.
It Is Mr. Tates' Intention to carry a
complete stock of building material,
Including1 Ume and roof paper, doors
and sash.
It would seem that such a business
ought to be made pay here, and once
It Is established It will prove a great
convenience to the people of the
surrounding country. The Immense
territory that such a business will
have to draw from would seem to jus
tify Its establishment
St. Dennls-Harras Case Monday.
On Monday the suit of Desire St
Dennis against Reynold Harras, will
be taken up in the circuit court and
It will occupy several days. It Is the
action brought by St. Dennis to secure
the cancellation of a lease . which
Harras claims to hold and the Issues
are somewhat similar to those In the
case recently tried out and In which
St. Dennis was victorious. Will M.
Peterson Is attorney for St. Dennis,
while D. W. Bailey has Harras1 case.

THE AUTOMOBILE.
Fanners Buy and Use Thrra and

J. W. Etter, while on his way to
Pendleton early in the week, leading
two horses in the rear of his vehicle,
met an automobile, driven at break
neck speed by another farmer, says
the Pilot Rock Record. The horses
which Mr. Etter was leading broke
loose and ran away. Mr. Etter had
almost reached Pendleton, but under
the circumstances was compelled to
return to Pilot Rock, near which place
he found his horses in a terribly ex
hausted condition, trying to keep
ahead of the flying auto in their re
treat The man who owns this particular
automobile was one of the first farm
ers In this county to anthematlxe the
horseless carriage as a result of get
ting piled up against a barbed-wire
fence by one of the annihilates of
time.
As Mr. Etter Is now financially ablo
to buy an automobile It Is now in or
der for him to put In his order for
one and bide his time. He can buy a
faster machine and get some satis
faction In making Mr. Snyder eat dirt
fo ra while, or he can scare some
other unsuspecting farmer out of his

Asylum Report.
The June report from the western
Washington hospital for the Insane
at Stellacoom has been received from
Superintendent A. P. Calhoun by the
state board of control. The number
of admissions continues high, for in
the past three months 1(0 patients
have been committed to the institution.
Four Attempts at Suicide.
Mr. Bessie Splcer of Lynden,
Wash., made four attempts at suicide
by drowning, but was not successful.
She will be sent to a hospital for
treatment for insanity.
