New Hotel lor The Dulles.
The new hotel directors and stock'
holders held a meeting Friday eve
ning to discuss the question as to
whether or not the hotel that has
been talked of so much, will be built,
and It was decided that It should by
a strong affirmative vote, says The
Dalles Chronicle. It has not been a
question of lack of capital that has
held the proposition back. It Is a
business project that could not be
rushed Into without studying the
question from all sides.
The projectors are almost a unit
for the building of the hotel.
Mr. Mueller of the Star Brewing
Co., and a well known hotel man,
when asked about the best location
for a hotel, said:. "Place your hotel
on west Second street on the location
you selected," and seemed to think It
was the most sightly place, and the
most public and most desirable place
In the city.
The secretary of the hotel project,
when asked about the time the hotel
will be built, said the company hopes

The Denver Post tells how to get
rid of dandelions, but It Is not thought
that Dalles dandelions could be
"shaken" that easily: "There are
those who say the dandelions cannot
be klllud. I know better I've tried
It.' I have n lawn 200 feet by 150
feet without a dandelion, and I didn't
rip up my lawn, either.
"How do I keep the aanaellons out?
I dig them out carefully every spring
and keep a close watch for their re-
appearance during the summer, thus
avoiding the seeding. Every spring
I scatter plenty of blue grass seed on
my lawn and thus supply It with seed
that Is lost to It by reason of frequent
cutting.
"Not only that, but when I am dig-
glng dandelions, I have a pocketfull
of seed handy and drop a pinch of
seed In each hole I make when I ex-
tract the dandelion from the sod. New
grass grows up quickly and fills the
hole and chokes the dandelion. The

Possessor of one of the most ex
pensive timepieces In the state of
Washington, recently purchased at a
cost of $703, E. W. Few, colored, al
though he owns mining property and
other real estate valued at over $30,
000, still s able to content himself
with a position as porter ami "shine"
in J. M. Keeler's barber shop on East
Main street, says the Walla Walla
Bulletin.
The costly watch which Few now
owns was secured from the Martin
Jewelry company of this city, made
to order. The works Is one of the
Hamilton highest grade movements,
with a special fancy dial and gold
hands and Is set In n solid fancy raised
gold hunting case with. applied work.
On the front of the ease Is engraved
lodge emblem, Mr. Few being a
member of the colored Masonic lodge.
while set In the back Is a diamond, n
two carat stone, which Is a perfect
gem.
J. W. Few Is the possessor of sev
eral sparklers, Including a large shirt
stud, and several rings and watch
charm settings. All these Jewels, to
gether with his watch, he keeps In a
safety deposit vault at ono of the local
banks.
Few owns shares in gold mines In
Alaska, Nevada and California. The
mining company In Alaska, of which
he owns one-fifth of the stock, has
refused an offer of $100,000 for Its
property, while the mine In Nevada
of which he Is a shareholder, Is locat
ed In the Searchlight district, Just re
cently opened up.
"I have a sufficient quarterly In
come from my Investments to enable
mo to live comfortably," said Mr. Few
to a Bulletin reporter . this morning,
"but I am not content to loaf. I came
here In December, took a liking to
the town and decided to locate here
for a while, at least. I accepted this
Job as porter because I find that It

' BOY ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

co. A Pasco dispatch aaya: During a
fit of despondency while Buffering cer
tain physical ailments from which he

from Wallula that he had been in
formed by a man named Bennington,
foreman of the sand crew some six
miles below Page, that a raft, on
which was the clothing of four men,
had been caught on the Snake river.
The clothing contained what was evidently-
all the money and valuables
the men had and gave no signs of their
whereabouts. Whether It Is murder
or suicide or accidental drowning, or
none of these cannot be ascertained
until Deputy Cummings reports which
should be tonight or In the morning.
Drowned In Snuke Klver.
While towing a raft of 300 old rail
road ties down Snake river near Cow
Bar, 12 miles below Starbuck, Floyd
F. Wilson was drowned Friday after
noon about C o'clock, says the Walla
Walla Union. The young man, In
company with Peter Ifess and Tom
Mcltae, was trying to pull the raft
around a clump of willows that ex-
( tended out Into the river, by means
of a long rope attached. Wilson wad-
ped Into a deep hole and crapmed,
thus disabling him from using his
arms to swim out. His companions
saw him go under and were unable
to locate the body for several hours
after.

Congressman W. R. Ellis left thl
morning for his home In Pendleton.
The Commercial club was preparing
to give him a reception this after
noon, It being understood that he wai
not to return until this evening. Con
gressman Ellis has a warm spot In
the hearts of the people of La Grande
and the club Intended to tender him
their appreciation for the fine oration
he jja-e us on the Fourth and his
general good will toward La Grande,

Dr, Gelsendorffer, who returned thla
morning from Condon where he had
been In consultation with Dr. Wood,
of that place, gives the information
that the spring wheat crop of Gilliam
county Is almost a total failure owing
to the winds and exeesslve warm
weather combined with a lack of
moisture. He, however, brought home
a sample of fall grain which has every
appearance of a healthy product. The
doctor says the fall crop In Gilliam
will be normal

would probably never recover, Eugene
Shorter, a youth who registered from
North Yakima, but whose home Is
Tacoma, shot and fatally wounded
himself while lying on a cot in the
Smith lodging house In this city to
night. Dr. Watklns stated this eve
ning that Shorter had but little chance
for recovery.
The wounded man arrived at Pasco
last night from Yakima and was in
company of his younger brother who
is about 14 years old. About 8:30
o'clock he retired to his room and
complained of not feeling well.
Dispatching his brother for a glass
of wafer, and adding, as the boy left
the room that he would soon be out
of his misery, he secured his revolver
placed It to his breast and fired.
Efforts are being made to secure
Information regarding the relatives of
the youth. The younger brother,
(razed with grief, ran crying from the
house, and up to a late hour tonight
has not returned to the bedside of his
dying brother.

cific fleet, to be delivered In San

for the warships, owing to a convic
tion on the part of the medical corps
