It took 1789,249.28 to build the Arlington-Condon
branch of the O. R. &
.V. during 1905 and 1906, says the
Oregon Dully Journal. It would take
$1,179,866 to reproduce the road at
the present time under conditions of
labor and material holding now. This
Is the information given by the offic
ials of the O. R. & N. as a result of
Investigations which have been car
ried on for some months In answer to
a request of the state railroad com
mission. It also required $1,253,755 to con
struct the Blggs-Shanlko branch, and
would take $1,352,738 to reproduce
the line. The cost of the Pilot Rock-
Pendleton brunch, Just completed, was
$342,018.98.
These figures Just completed by the
auditing departments of the different
branches are the forerunners of simi
lar figures on every line of railroad
In the state over which the commis
sion has Jurisdiction. They have been
complied, by the roads at the request
of the commission, and will be check
ed over by the commission for possi
ble error.
The statistics will be of great value
to the commission and to the state for
various reasons. They will furnish a
basis of authentic statistics upon
which assessors may rely in estimat
ing the tax assessment of the proper
ties. It will also furnish a base from
which rates may be computed by the
commission.
Before the task Is completed the
commission will require similar state
ments from the O. It. & X., the South
ern Pacific and all lines under their
Jurisdiction, which embraces all rail
roads doing a carrying business out
side the limits of an Incorporated city
or town.
A Grand Family Medicine. .
"It gives me pleasure to speak a
good word for Electric Bitters," writes
Mr. Frank Conlan of No. 438 Hous

family medicine for dyspepsia and
liver complications; while for lame
back and weak kidneys It cannot be
recommended too highly." Electric
Bitters regulate the digestive func
tions, purify the blood, and Impart
renewed vigor and vitality to the
weak and deblllated of both sexes.

Making It Plain.
Henri was paying his first visit to
London and was already wishing him
self borne In gay Paree, for be knew
not a word of English. lie bad been
very unfortunate and bad lost all bis
luggage, a toothbrush. So be deter
mined to buy another. But how was
be to make bis needs understood?
At last bis luck turned, however,
and be espied a chemist's shop with a
notice outside, "Icl on Parle Francois."
In be went and told the assistant In
French what be wanted. But that as
sistant knew no language except Eng
lish, and another who came to help
him was Just as far at sea.
But the proprietor was an Intelligent
man, and be knew at once from the
cat of the customer's clothes that be
was speaking French.
"Leave him to me," be said, with a
superior smile.
Then, forming a megaphone wltb bis
bands, be shouted In the Frenchman's
ear:
"Our assistant who speaks French Is
out at lunch. You'll bare to wait!"
London Scraps.
Swordimen of the 8ea.
The swordsmen of the sea are the
sawflsher, spearflshes, sail fishes, sword-
fishes and the narwhal, with Its spiral
ly twisted straight hJBks. The saw
fishes Inhabit the warmer seas, while
the narwhal Is a creature of the arctic.
The tusk of the narwhal Is hollow
nearly to the point and Is spirally
grooved. It uses Its tusk as a weapon
of defense and to plunge through the
Ice to breathe, the narwhal being a
cetacean. Sometimes when a boat has
been caught In the Ice great damage
has been Inflicted by tho lnquisitlve
ness or blundering of this great crea
ture, that sometimes reaches a length
of fifteen feet, with a tusk of from six
to ten feet In length. As a rule, how
ever, the narwhal uses Its tusk for the
purpose of klllhig fish for food. In the
castle of Rosenberg tue kings of Den
mark have long possessed a magnifi
cent throne ninde of tusks of this
cetacean. These tusks are harder and
whiter than Ivory.
Baavtra Train Their Young.
Naturalists have placed the beaver a
long way down In the list of verte
brates, but It undoubtedly stands next
to man In the variety of occupations In
which It engages. AH cats are hunt
ers, while foxes that are not thieves
may be Included also among the Sim
rods. AH canaries are prima donnas,
and monkeys make clever comedians,
but It Is only the beaver parent that
educates Its children to take up several
trades. In a single colony among them
you will find civil and marine engi
neers, woodchoppers, raftsmen, labor
ers, quarrymen, miners, plasterers,
masons, carpenters, hodcarrlcrs and
fishermen. All beavers take contracts
for building dams, but when the work
Is undertaken the task Is so divided
that each member of the colony has its
own particular work to look after. In
this way they make some wonderful
excavations and construct their dams
In an Incredibly short time.
Marry and Part For a Year.
Among the many peculiar customs
prevalent among tho people of Central
America Is that of parting for one year
after the uiurrlage ceremony has been
solemnized. This custom has prevaUed
among the Jarnos from time Immemo
rial. There is no courtship allowed to
bo carried on between the parties prior
to the wedding. Wheu a man selects a
woman he obtulns the consent of the
parents on both sides, and if this Is
given they are at onco married. The
reason, however, for their not living
together ns man and wife for one year
after marriage is In order to permit of
the parties visiting oud staying with
their respective friends in different
parts of the country, which is a cus
tomary thing and occupies the time
specified. Ninety-nine out of a hundred
of these marriages turn out well.
A Chance to Spoon.
A young couple from the suburbs
went to Dublin the other day to see
the pantomime. Belug early, they vis
ited a tea room and had the place all to
themselves. The attending waitress
had omitted In serving them to supply
the necessary linpleiucut to effectually
assist in the proper and palatable ad
mixture of tho tea, cream and sugar.
"Can we have a spoon V inquired
the swain.
"Certainly," replied the observant at
tendant "I am Just tidying up, and
you can have the whole room to your
selves In a minute or two." Liverpool
Mercury.
Holding His Job.
"I think the man who works at that
place across the street is the most
faithful and conscientious workman I

and always labors away till It's too
dark to see any longer."
"Faithful workman! Great Scott!
He's the proprietor of the shop!"
