The God of life, Is The Lord of
toil,
And naught cares he if the tool
Be anvil, or needle, or hoe, or
brain,
Or the toller a sage, or a fool:
The toll is the thing, for a man
must grow
O'er-topping his greatest
work:
The length of the fall 'tvvixt
heaven and hell
Is the length of a prostrate
shirk.
The call's for a man with his
task to-heel,
And his aim, the good of his
clan:
The height of the rise, 'twist
heaven and hell.
Is the height of an upright man.

the secure establishment of the gold
standard in our monetary system.
In another matter of Importance,
tariff reform, he failed to Impress
his will on the country only because
he was deserted at the critical mo
ment by members of his party In the
United States.
President Roosevelt In his tribute
to the late ex-president, said that
Mr. Cleveland was possessed of a
courage that quailed before 'no hos
tility when, once he was convinced
where his duty lay. No one questions
the Justice of this view.
Fosslbly no other president since
Andrew Jackson was so Impatient of
opposition to his course when once
marked out. President Roosevelt's
motto is: To speak softly, but carry
a big stick. Mr. Cleveland carried a
big stick equal in size to Theodore's,
but he was unable to speak softly.
The 11 years that have elapsed since
Mr. Cleveland's retirement to private
life have softened the animosities
which his political career aroused and
he went to his grave regarded as one
of the great men of his time and as
probably one of our five or six great
presidents.
TEACHES.
SALOONMEN S REVENGE.
A movement has been started to
close cigar stores and soft drink par
lors In this city, for the avowed pur
pose of getting "revenge" on th
keepers of these places who "have been
allowed to remain open on Sunday
while the saloons have been required
to close under the state law.
as this matter will now come be
fore the grand Jury, if complaint 1
actually made, there Is little possi
billty of any of the cigar stores or
soft drink parlors being required to
close.
The state law does not Intend to
close any orderly business house. Sa
loons are creators of disorder and for
this reason a Sunday closing law
deemed a proper thing for any civil
i?ed community.
But orderly, peaceable places, where
families congregate and where no
disorder or rowdyism originates aiy
not within the meaning of the law and
it is not likely that any Umatilla
county grand jury will find such
rlaces guilty of any crime, simply to
give a few disgruntled saloonmen re
venge.
It Is hoped that the former saloon
men see the folly o ftrylng to use the
law ot "get even." It will only ere
ate prejudice against them.

SAME OLD FOl'KTin
The Fourth of July like the Bible,
ntvT changes. It iS one of the fixed
Institutional phases of American na
tional life. No matter what else may
change, the sentiment behind the
Fourth of July, the patriotic fervor of
the day is perpetually the same.
It is strange to think that the coun
try has entirely outgrown Its colonial
attributes. Nothing of that period
exists today. All the material feat
ure of the country have been com
pletely revolutionized. Religion, pol
itics, industrial methods, science, ed
ucational ideals all have been "turn
ed inside out' "time and time again.
And yet through all these mental
and physical vicissitudes, through all
these revolutionary paroxysms In all
these upheavals, mental avalanches
and brain storms, under American
national life and back of it and
through the fabric of It all, permeates
that same old patriotic sentiment
which gave a voice and enthusiasm to
the first Fourth of July celebra
tion. The nation can never grow away
from It. It will always find a voice
and a place In the front rank of every
American procession.
If you see It In the East Oregonlan,
It's so. '
CLEVELAND'S ACHIEVEMENTS.
The name of the late Grover Cleve
land will be associated in his coun
try's history with three matters of
.importance: the removal of the Mon
.roe Doctrine from the realm of mere
academic discussion and Its estab
lishment as a part of the practical
policy of the United States; the vln
dicatlon of the federal power In the
(Teat railroad atrika of 1114, and
Peaches are raised and nurtured In
all parts of the country, but It Is gen
erally agreed that the most tempting
kind comes from the blue grass re
gion of Kentucky.
California peaches are used largely
by easterners. They are soft and ten
der to the touch, rather large and
flowery, and are very sweet.
The New England peach is often
hard and sour. Some varieties, how
ever, have a splendid flavor. The best
preserved peaches come from New
ni.h'.u.'J.
The New York peach Is always of
the cling-Ktone variety. It is almost
impossible to separate the peach from
the stone.
Our annual crop of peaches, while
very expensive to raise (and constant
ly growing more so), gives employ
ment to thousands of men, who labor
night and day to keep the peaches up
tn the standard.
The points of a peach are not under
stood by. all. Those who are Interest
ed in their culture should carefully
observe the following rules:
Peaches should be handled with
gloves.
They should never be picked when
green, but only when they begin to
look good enough to eat.
Each peach should be well wrapped
Great care, however, should be taken
not to squeeze too hard. The pressure
should be uniform.
Change the variety from time to
time, and you will be surprised at the
results. Almost any one variety of
peace gets tiresome if Indulged In too
leng.
Peaches should be kept away from
a glaring light. When testing them,
turn down the gas. Success Maga
zine.

REMARKABLE RECOVERY,
THANKS TO PE-RU-NA.
Mrs. Frank Stroebe, R. F. D. 1, Apple
ton, Is., writes:
"I began uslnj; Pcruna a few monthi
ago when my health and strength were
all gone, and I wus nothiug but a
nervous wreck, could not sleep, eat or
rest properly, and felt uo desire to live.
"Three bottles of Feruna made m
look at life iu a different light, aa I be
gan to regain my lost strength. While
my recovery took nearly four months,
at the end of that time I was better than
I ever had been before. I had a splen
did color and never weighed more in
my life.
'I certainly think Pernna is without
a rival as a tonic and strength builder,
and it has my endorsement."
This lady entirely recovered from a
nervous breakdown. She did not go
away to a sanitarium, and spend hun
dreds of dollars for a cure. Sho Just
staid at home, took Pcruna, and in four
months weighed more than ever in hor
life, had a splendid color, life looked
bright to her. Feruna did all this for
her. What more could be expected of
any remedy?

TAFTS AXCESTftAL HOME.
Mr. Taft s anoestors were among
the founders of Jamaica and Town-
send, Vt., settling there just before
the Revolutionary war, and there runs
a tradition from among them that
the sound of the cannonading at the
battle of Bunker Hill was distinctly
heard there, says a New York paper.
This seems a pretty large story, for
Jamaica and Towrisend must be dis
tant nearly 100 miles in a bee line.
Yet Arago, the French physicist of the
early 19th century, established the fact
that the cannon of that time could be
heard at a distance of 90 to 125 miles.
Under favorable atmospheric con
ditions It Is quite possible that the
pioneer people on the Vermont hills
above the Connecticut valley heard
he sound of the cannon of the Brlt-
sh ships borne on the morning air of
June 17. 1775.
That our American rorcsts ofcound Id
plants which possess the most valuable
medicinal virtues is abundantly attested
by scores of the most eminent medical
writers and teachers. Even the untu
tored Indians bad discovered the useful
ness of many native plants before the
advent of the white raco. This informa
tion. Imparted freely to the whites, led
the latter to continue Investigations until
to-day we have a rich assortment of most
