At a price that is $1000 lower than
the former bid W. C. Betts has been
awarded the contract for extending
and repairing the levee and he is to
commence work next Monday. After
his bid was accepted by the council
last night the ordinance granting him
the contract was introduced and
passed. The contract between the
levee committee and Betts was then
signed uj and the city given a bond
for the performance of the work.
BJds Were Lower.
The council met in adjourned ses
sion at 7:30 last evening and It was
found that both Betts and the New
port company had submitted bids
upon the levee work. Betts' bid was
the same as his former offer except
ing that he agreed to make but one
charge on earth that was excavated
and then used in the embankment.
The Newports made a lower bid than
formerly on excavating and their
prices on the construction work were
lower than those of Betts' while their
prices for excavating were higher.

the Fourth at the Resort.
Wenaha springs Is proving a pop
ular place to spend the fourth of
July since this town is not to cele
brate and there will be many promi
nent Pendletonians there tomorrow.
Many business men will take the ad
vantage of the opportunity to get two
days' rest In the cool air of old Bing
ham and to enjoy the swimming pool.
Several couples left this morning
for the place, intending to remain
until Monday or later. Among these
were Mr. and Mrs. Leon Cohen, Mr.
and Mrs. C. E. Roosevelt, Mr. and
Mrs. E. J. Burke, Mr. and Mrs. Judd
and others.
Tonight train No. 2 will take a large
crowd of young men who will go up
to spend Saturday and Sunday. Among

NEW LINE IN IDAHO.
Fire Destroys Shed.
A small fire occurred in the east
end of town yesterday afternoon when
the woodshed of Joe Forest was burn
ed. The Forest place Is on Stonewall
Jackson street between Court and
Lewis streets. The east end hose com-
nanv. No. 6. was called out and suc
ceeded in stopping the fire from
spreading beyond the shed.

Though there Is to be no fourth of
July celebration in Pendleton this
year, yet the city will observe the na
tional holiday to the extent of closing
all lines of business. ' All general
stores will be closed during the en
tire day tomorrow, as will also the
banks. Dostofflce. public offices, etc.
The -barber shops will be open dur
ing the forenoon tomorrow only and
in order to handle tne extra work
that will be required of them the
shops will stay open until 10 o'clock
tonight.
County Celebrations.
But while there will be no celebra
tion here, there , will be an abundance
of entertainment at other places In
the county. On the reservation the
Indians will hold a celebration and
the bulk of the people of the city
will be there. Two camps are to be
held, the Christian Indians at the old
agency grounds, while the "old time
eiphratlon will be held at Cayuse.
Nearly all the available rigs and au-
tos are now being engaged by parties
Intending to spend the day on the res
ervation. Echo, Pilot Rock and Helix will
air hold celebrations and each place
will have representatives from Pen
dleton. Many will also go to Wena
ha Springs tonight to spend the next
two days at that resort, while some
families are already at the two resorts
in the south end of the county.
Quite a few are preparing to go to
Wniin Walla this evening on the eve
ning train. No special train will be
run to the Garden City.
