Friederlchshafen, July 8. Count
Zeppelin yesterday ( outdistanced all
world records for steerable ballons,
He remained In the air for 12 hours,
traversed- the greater part of north'
ern Switzerland and visited Zurich,
Wlnterthur and Lucerne, attaining an
average speed of 84. miles an hour.
His airship displayed splendid quail
ties of dlrlglblllty and was quite up
to the greatest expectations.
In the most desirable weather con
ditions, almont a dead calm, the air
ship manned by a crew of four under
the leadership of Count Zeppelin left
Its floating home on Lake Constance
at 8:30 In the morning Less than five
minutes later the balloon rose abou
1000 feet In the air and turned her
bows toward Constance. About 8
o'clock It had disappeared on the
western horizon.
Telephone messages from Frauden
foldt, Dlnderthur and other towns
soon reported the appearance of the
airship and her passage over the Can
ton of Zurich. The giant craft re
mained 10 minutes hovering over the
town of Zurich and the lake and then
vanlHhed from view at a rapid rate
In the direction of Lucerne.
Cuts Many Figures.
It was about 11 o'clock when the
airship came Into view at Lucerne and
the thousands of astonished tourists
from all parts of the world, Includ
ing hundreds of Americans, greeted
her with loud cheers as she sailed
BOATS OX OPEN" KIVEK.
Portland Men Subscribe. $12,000 To-
wurd Oicralng Steamers.
Crowded to such an extent that
even standing room was at a prem
ium was the assembly room In the new
Commercial club building last night
when tho special meeting of the club
was called to order for the purpose
of discussing Improvements In river
transportation conditions between
Portland and the interior, says the
Portland Oregonian.
A subscription to Install two boats
on the open river was sianeo ana
112,000 subscribed.
So enthusiastic was the meeting that
not only was river transportation dis
cussed, but it was suggested and
strongly urged that Portland take, the
Initiative and construct a railroad
from this city through the Interior
to Salt Lake.. Governor Chamberlain
suggested that the state Itself build
and operate a railroad connecting
Portland with the Interior.
In order to emphasize the state
ments of the speakers and to demon
strate the various points that were
raised, a huge map waa posted on the
wall, in plain view of the audience.
It was a comprehensive map, new and
thoroughly accurate, showing the rail
road lines and proposed extensions
throughout the states of Oregon and
Washington.
Large Piind In Sight.
Speeches were .made by several
members of the committee in which
the necessity of opening the Colum
bia river above the portage road was
urged. Immediately after the speech
es, a subscription was opened and
more than $12,000 was subscribed by
those who had attended. Promises
for a considerably larger sum were
also given at the time. The fund
will be used to operate two boats on
tho upper river.
Sir. Teal was the first speaker and
he, by means of the chart and an ex-
nsive knowledge of the subject,
showed how the state of Oregon had
boen retarded In Its growth and de-
elopment by want of transportation!
icilltlcs and how, the state of Wash
ington had advanced as a result of
adequate transportation lines.
EIGHT ANARCHIST SHEETS.
lvwlniiistor General Will Exterminate
Red PnHTS.
A crusade which will probably re
sult in the suppressing of all anarchist
papers nnd periodicals, with the excep
tion of those devoted to purely philo
sophic anarchism, will be commenced
Postmaster General Meyer. A
thorough Investigation of all papers
suspected of violent tendencies will be
made by postal officials and It is pos-
Ible that a few socialistic sheets may
fall under the ban of official dlspleas-
re.
Following his order denying the use
of the malls to a Paterson anarchist
paper, Mr. Meyer Instructed the third
assistant postmaster general to form-
late an order providing that papers
f an anarchistic or socialistic char
acter, printed In a foreign language,
would be required to print with It a
translation In English of any matter
that was Incendiary or advocated an
archy. An examination, of the law,
however, disclosed that such an order
could not be based on It, and accord
ingly Mr. Meyer suggested to the
postoffice committees of congress an
amendment to section 3893 of the re
vesed statutes, which prohibits the
carrying In the malls of Indecent mat
ter. The amendment which was In
serted and upon which will be based
the forthcoming order of the post
master general is as follows:
"And the term 'Indecent' wHhlnvthe
Intendment of this section shall in
clude matter of a character tending
to incite arson, murder or assassina
tion." This amendment will become active
tomorrow, and at that time It is the
Intention of the postmaster general to
detail law officers of the department
to examine carefully a score or more
of papers, some of which are printed
hi the English language, to see if they
are violating the new order.

quickly over the waters of the lake.
Count Zeppelin guided his airship and
proceeded to carry out a long serfes
of evolutions which Included com
plicated figures, circles, the figure
eight, sharp turns, descents and as
cents. He then undertook a tour of
the whole lake, visiting every bay and
Indent along the shores. Finally he
turned the nose of the ship home
ward, crossing the Albls range of
mountains high in the air and travel
ing at a good pace. The balloon soon
reached Zurich again, encircled the
town hall and continued on Its way,
Hock to Shed.
By 8:30 o'clock in the evening the
airship had reached Lake Constance
and turned east to Bregenze, a fron
tier town of Austria-Hungary. From
that place It traveled back to Frelder
erlchshafen, .executing a most diffi
cult series of maneuvers all the while
until it was over the region. It de
scended to within 100 feet of the
roofs of the houses and then slipped
easily Into the shed from which K
had been absent Just 12 hours. The
greatest altitude reached In the long
voyage was 2600 feet and the distance
covered was about 220 miles as the
crow flies.
Passengers traveling on a train be
tween Zurich and Constance say that
the balloon easily overhauled the
train which it left behind.
Count Zeppelin considers the pros
pects for the approaching 24-hour
flight as favorable.

Urinary disorders quickly follow;
Diabetes and finally Brlght'a dis

kidney ills.

Mrs. Laura McClure, living at 1213
Madison avenue, La Grande, Ore.,
says: "I have used Doan'a Kidney
Pills off and on for three or four
years and the best possible results
have always been obtained. An
overexertion or the contraction of a
cold often served to bring- on back
ache and at such times my kidneys
would be weak and I would be great
ly annoyed by dizzy spells. I would
be restless and nervous and as a re
sult of the loss of sleep, would arise
in the morning feeling tired and worn
out. Learning of the merits of
Doan's Kidney Pills, I procured a
box, took them according to direc
tions and they relieved me at once. I
have kept them in the house since as
I have the greatest confidence in
them. When I feel any of the attacks
coming on I immediately resort to
Doan's Kidney Pllle and they never
fall to give the desired results."

FOH A BIG GAME KESEHVE.
Sivllon of Klnnuitlt County May Be
Set Aside.
The Wooley crek district In Salmon
and Klamath rivers Is being talked of
as a fine tract for a national game
preserve, says the Southern Oregonian.
Stt'ps are being taken to place It be
fore the national preserve bureau at
Washington. The district abounds with
game and Its ninny streams and lakes
are alive with fish.
The Scott Valley Advance says:
Were this place to be made Into a
national preserve or park with sulta-
ole trails and bridges and competent
wardens to enforce the game regula
tions and keep down predatory ani
mals It would soon be one of the great
est national attractions of- this state;
also If the district were plentifully
stocked with game the overflow
would make good hunting nt the pro
per season In all the adjacent country.
The scenic attractions of the whole
place are magnificent, embracing the
eastern slope of the well known Mar
ble mountain country with miles of
beautiful mountain meadows and rug
ged peaks.
