Town Wiped Out.
With tho exception of Robinson &
Robinson's general store, the resi
dence of W. P. Yarncll and a lodging
house, in the rear of the main street,
the town of North Hooper was wiped
off the map at 4 o'clock yesterday af
ternoon, ayg the Washtucna Enter
prise. 8he fire originated In an un
known manner In a little room con
nected with Gholson & Larson's sa
loon and the devastation was complete
In 40 minutes. The only theory ad
vanced Is the careles throwing about
of cigarettes.
Tho building destroyed were G. O.
Mustard's saloon, Gholson & Larson's
saloon and dance hall, George Barnes'
barber shop, W. P. Yarnell's saloon,
Miller &Pearson's saloon, Ben John
son's saloon, a restaurant and other
smaller buildings. The total amount
of the losses sustained can not be es
timated. The contents of all the
buildings except Mustard's were
burned. Mustard saved a part of his
goods from the flames and establish
ed business In a Bmall shack. No
means of fighting fire were at hand.
The buildings were temporary struc
tures and It Is understood that no In
surance was carried In tho town, as
none of the companies would Invite
tho risks.
Rig Mining Deal.
A placer deal and one of tho big
Beet that has been pulled off in Ore
gon sine" the days when placer min
ing was king In the mining camps of
the west, was consummated In Baker
City yesterday, says the Baker City
Democrat.
The sale was that of 160 acres of
placer ground, known as the under
wood placers, on Pine creek, two
miles south of Cornucopia, owned by
George Herbert, H. G. Blair and
James Underwood. The purchasers
are Spokane people represented by
C. F. Soderllng and B. E. Smith. The
consideration was 150,000.
It is understood the purchasers will
make Immediate arrangements to op
erate the placers on a very extensive
scale.
For several years the owners have
carried on operations In a prlmatlve
way on account of lack of means to
properly equip them. They have paid
handsomely, however, and It Is cer
tain that big dividends will result for
the new owners.
Drilling for Oil.
Actual drilling commenced last
Thursday on the first prospect well
which Is to be sunk by the Madras
Oil & Gas company, and unless some
unexpected accident delays them,
work will be continued steadily night
and day until they have solved the
question of whether or not oil exists
I.EW1STOX KXPFCTS TRAINS.
Kunion-ri That Scrvlno Will IU Inaug
urated on LewNton-Ripiirhi Line.
It Is rumored In railroad circles
I xl;iy that an early schedule may. be
expected on the Lewistnn-Itlparla line,
but no definite Information as to when
the service will be Inaugurated i."
available.' It lias been known for some
time that the officials of both the
Northern l'aclfle niul O, It. & N. com
panics have been laboring to reach an
agreement as to 'the, plan for Joint
operation ami division of the business,
but the companies have not yet an
nounced the results of these confer
ences. The Portland office of the O. R. &
N. company has made all prepara
tions to Inaugurate a train service as
noon as instructions to do po are re
ceived. The first traffic sheet pre
paratory to Inaugurating the service
was then extended to June 1, and a
further extension until July 1 after
wards taken.
The tariff sheets for tho new road
have been recently revised, and a
train schedule adopted, but the time
for these to become effective has not
been stated. The company has also
had the tickets for the new road
printed, and It Is generally believed
an early announcement may be ex
pected. Lewlston Teller.

MAY OFST FOREIGNERS.
Montenegrins! May Bo Ankeil to Va
cate RjOMlyn Region.
No fenr is felt ns Roslyn because of
ithe disturbance made there and the
(threats Issued by the Montenegrins,
according to City Councilman Fred
Shaw who has Just returned from the
hills, says the North Yakima Repub
lic. The Montenegrins, who are hus
ky, big men, without families, are not
considered altogether desirable as an
element In the community by the
other miners, and will probably be
given An opportunity to move along
to some other center of activity.
At present there Is no trouble of a
.special kind. Tho whole difficulty
arises from the fact that tho men
have Idle time on their hands. There
Is not sufficient demand for the out
put of the mines to keep the hand
all busy and therefore the men are
pot crowded with work. The company
Is giving them a day or two a week,
enough to support them, but the bal
ance of their time is their own and
as a consequence they have grown
discontented.

In paying quantities underneath the
wheat fields of north-central Crook
county, says the Madras Pioneer. The
work is in charge of General Manager
Ross, who has had 23 years' exper
ience, in drilling for oil, and prepara
tions' have been made to continue the
first well to a depth of 4000 feet If
necessary, although it Is confidently
expected that oil will be found long
before that depth is reached. For the
present only one shift is worked at
the drill, but as soon as It gets in
good working condition the drill will
be kept going night and day, so that
rapid progress will be made.
No Trouble Tliis Year.
A troublesome question, which has
heretofore been a bitter one of con.
tentlon, was amicably settled last
week and there will be no feud be
tween the sheep and cattle men this
year, says the Sumpter American.
A committee of the sheep and cat
tle owners who recently leased the
100,000 odd acres of timber lands
between Sumpter and the Susanvllle
and John Day country, on the south
and west, and Burnt river country on
the south and east, met Frank Gardi
ner, who has charge of the lands, dur
ing the week and allotments were
made to the complete satisfaction of
all.
The sheep men are to graze on the
lands running from Sumpter to Whit
tin, while the cattlemen are to con
fine their stock on what has been
termed the Burnt river slope, which
embraces the lands between Whitney
and the Malheur county line.
A Dig Reulty Sale.
The largest sale of real estate In
the history of the northwest where
the transfer is being made by one
firm Is now being negotiated at We
natchee and involves the sale of the
large stock ranch of which Letser
Coffin of this city, says the Lewlston
Teller, is the owner of a half inter
est. The ranch Is located on the Co
lumbia river below Wenatchee, and Is
several miles in length by several
miles In width. It contains a com
plete independent telephone system,
and is equipped with every facility
for handling the ranch business. The
deal now being negotiated deals only
with the ranch and Its improvements,
but involves approximately $250,000.
A New Deputy.
