N.ntli Yiiklnni Officers Inclined to be
Skeptical.
The alleged "conversion" of Thom
as McCarthy, petty larcenlst, who re
cently was released from the county
Jail after serving a term for the theft
of a tent from a second hand store,
Is of Interest to the sheriff's office.
It has been known for some time

past that McCarthy wah wanted by
the Indiana authorities for breaking
parole and a notice to that effect is
In the sheriff's office. McCarthy's
conversion and decision to return to
Indiana will save some trouble ana
expense.
There is another matter, however,
that might be adjusted with advan
tage before Mr. McCarthy puts his
virtuous resolve Into execution and
goes back to the "fourteen" years In
a cell, the ftcts concerning which are
that he will probably not be requir
ed to serve more than a month, as
he well knows.
Disclaimed Ownership.
When McCarty was arrested for
stealing the tent the officers found In
Ids room several suitcases filled with
ii variety of dry goods, from gaud
ily colored Indian blankets, to draw
ing room curtains and ladles' dress
es. The value of the stuff, all of
which was new and doubtless repre
sented considerable activity on the
part of McCarthy along the line of his
other exploits which have successive
ly landed him In different Jails, Is
abdut $150. McCarthy was question
ed about this stuff after his arrest on
the charge of stealing the tent and
told the officers the dry goods were
not his. After being released for a
month or so, McCarthy, It Is sup
posed, gained courage together with
his religion and came to the sheriff's
office a few days ago and asked for
his goods. Deputy Sheriff Cox was
alone In the office and knew that the
stuff had been taken from McCarthy's
room and so handed out the suitcases
and their contents to the "convert."
Cnihvt n lluskrtfull.
Mr. Cox had his suspicions as to
McCarthy's tit Jo to the property be
ing iilte clear, but as the goods had
not been Identified ns stolen by any
of tlie storekeepers of the city, many
of whom, months ago. Inspected
them, there was nothing for It but to
hand the stuff over to McCarthy. He
game to the sheriff's office with a
clothes basket and took all of the
stuff away.
The officers hope that In view of
Ills conversion McCarthy will return
to the office, redeposlt the property
and tell them Just where he got the
various articles so that they may be
returned to the rightful owners, pro
vided, of course, that McCarthy's late
ly awakened conscience tells hi mthat
they do not rightfully belong to him.
