which resulted yesterday In the con
viction of Frederick A. Hydo and
Joost H. Schneider, and the acquittal
of John A. Benson and Henry P. Dl
mond, Assistant Attorney-General A.
B. Pugh declares that while the trial
of these four men has cost the gov
ernment 148,360, the beneficial re
nulls to the land department In the
future administration of public land
laws are beyond calculation, says a
WnshlnRtnn dispatch.
The net results, he says, will be the
restoration to the government of more
than 100,000 acres of public lands,
valued fit $1,000,000.
Mr. Pu(?h says:
The verdict In the case Is not at all
strange, under the circumstances, to
one who fully understands the situa
tion, and so far as practical v results
to the Land Department are con
cerned, all has been accomplished that
would have been accomplished by a
verdict against all four defendants.
While the Investigation loading up
to the Indictment and trial and the
trial Itself have cost the government
a grcaf deal of money, the benefit re
sulting to the lamldepartment In the
future administration of the land laws
h simply Incalculable. The last ves
tige ff the conspiracy which originat
ed on the Pacific Coast about ten
years ago now has been utterly de
stroyed and It Is not likely that other
similar schemes will again be at
tempted.
Asa net result there will be restored
to the government something over
100. 000 acres of public land which
were selected under the fraudulent
practice charged in the Indictment In
this case. The selections will now be
taken up and adjudicated by the land
department.
The valuC of the land has very
greatly Increased since Its selection
eight, nine nnd ten years ago, so that
the 100.000 acres or more Immediate
ly Involved' In the trial are probably
now worth from JS to $10 an acre.
Patents were secured for something
like 40,000 acres of public land be
fore the fraud was discovered, which
was In November, 1902. Suits have
been Instituted by the Department of
Justice for the recovery of this land,
and will now be prosecuted to final
conclusion. Insofar as the land has
not passed Into the hands of Innocent
purchasers It will be recovered. It Is
not likely, however, that as to a great
many of the patented lands the titles
may now be In the hands of Innocent
holders and therefore beyond re
covery. Altogether there were 108 witnesses
Ir the case. Mr. Pugh today received
congratulatory telegrams on the suc
cessful outcome of the trial from
Kranrls J. Heiiey, former Interior de
triment officials and otheis promi
nently Identified with the ease. The
prosecution was conducted by District
Attorney Haker and Mr. Pugh.

says a Des Moines, Iowa, special to
the Tribune.
Mrs. Sevbert has occupied a lead
Ing place in the social circle of Des
Moines and Council Bluffs, where her
former husband. Dr. William Seybert,
Is still living. She is a handsome and
aecnmnllshed woman.
Lytle's wife was granted a divorce
from him lost week on the grounds
of desertion. She is working in a
laundry to' support herself and child,
while Lytle and his new wife have
rented a beautiful cottage near the
luxurious Wels home. Under the
tnua law. a divorced person can not
remarry within a year, and for this
reason Mrs. Seybert and her husband
found It necessary to go to Missouri
to wetl.
It Is said that her father seriously
opposed the match. Lytle appeared
nt the Wels home a few days after his
wife's divorce was granted. None of
the neighbors knew him, and though
a neighborly Interest took many to
thi Wels home, the stranger was not
presented, and all efforts to learn his
name or relationship were In vain un
til the party went to St. Joseph, where
the marriage license was granted and
the bridegroom's name became
known.
It Is rumored today that Lytle's for
mer wife Is planning to file charges
against him for violating the divorce
law and remarrying within a year,
but tonight she refused to affirm thla
"I do not know what I shall do,'
she said. "I did not know my hus
band was married, although I was
told he was going with a wealthy so
clety woman."
TKIED FOR MURDER.
Mra. Lllu Meadows Will Re Placed on
Trial Tomorrow.
Oklahoma City, Okla., June 25.
Charged with the murder of her hus
band because of her alleged Infatua
tion for another man, Mrs. Llla Mead
ows will be placed on trial tomorrow.
The body of J, R, Meadows, a tele
phone lineman, was found In a grave
near Capitol Hill about a year ago.
Mrs. Meadows and her alleged para
mour, Rudolph Tegeler, were arrest
ed. Tho latter has been tried and
convicted and sentenced to prison for
life.
The prosecution will attempt to
show that Tegeler and Mrs. Meadows
were unduly Intimate and that they
were seen together on the night
Meadows was supposed to have been
murdered. Evidence of a startling
nature Is anticipated.

Hop AoTCfljro Cut Down.
A recent Investigation of the hop
situation In the Yakima valley by G.
C. Mitchell Bhows that of the 3225
acres devoted to hop growing last
year only 1609 acres are being culti
vated to that crop this season. The
vines on 902 acres have been plowed
up and yards to the amount of 714
acres are not being cultivated or
polled. This leaves only 1609 acres
to be picked this year, and It Is not
expected that they will produce more
than six bales to tho acre, as none
of the yards are receiving the usual
car. Over !000 bales of old hops re
main In the valley that cannot bo sold
for half the cost jf production, and
the new crop Is not expected to bring
the grower more than 5c per pound.

Pnroled Irisoner Rearrested.
Decked out nl another man's wear
ing apparel, which he had stolen and
hidden away some time previously,
and thinking the owner had forgotten
all about them, Wallace Ketterman, a
paroled prisoner from the peniten
tiary, attended the annual picnic nt
Elberton,. Whitman, county, last week,
says the Walla Walla Bulletin. But
the owner of the "rags" was there and
recognized his clothes. The authori
ties were notified and Ketterman was
arrested.
Ketterman was sent up In October,
1P05, to serve eight years for horse
stealing and was paroled January 27,
1 o S . The prison authorities have
sent for him nnd he will be brought
back to serve the remainder of his
term.
