Robber Caught, Confesses.
The United States district attorney's
office was notified today that the
man who robbed the, Marysvllle poBt
offlce on the night of June 2, at which
time he made away with consider
able booty, has been arrested, exam
ined and held to the federal grand
Jury, which convenes in tho southern
division at Pocatello next Septem
ber, says tho Boise News. The pris
oner, who gave his name as Joseph
Griffin, confessed to the robbery and
hiding of the booty when confronted
with the evidence of his guilty.
The postofflce at Marysvlllo Is lo
cated In the store of Hale & Co.,
Alma II. Hale being the postmaster.
Tho prisoner entered the building, It
Is supposed, through a window, and
robbed the office and store of con
siderable cash and other articles
which he took away with him in bags
and boxes. Marshal C. S. Drolllnger
set out on the fellow's trail and af
ter shadowing him for several days,
managed to effect a capture. Grif
fin wus arraigned before Justice of
tho Peace J. G. Wood, and given a
preliminary examination. When he
found that the facts were too many
against him he broke down and con
fessed to tho crime, offering at the
same time to lead the marshal and
several others to the place where he
secreted the stolen goods. This he
did later and the court Immediately
bound him o,ver to the federal grand
Jury.
May Add New Course.
With a desire to further perfect
the pubic schools of Baker, Superin
tendent J. A. Churchill contemplates
adding a manual training course to
the already splendid courses of train
ing given students, says the Baker
City Herald.
Should he decide to Inaugurate this
splendid feature which Is now being
taken up by all of the larger cities In
the countYy he will have the Indi
vidual support of tho schools' pat
rons, for under his management the
schools have advanced steadily and
surely.
It would be hard Indeed to give too
much praise to the manual training.

the time the present council commenc
ed to handle the reins.

Dr. W. H. Lytle, federal sheep In
spector for Oregon, passed through
Portland last night on a three weeks'
trip of Inspection up tho Willamette
valley, says tho Oregon Daily Journal.
Dr. Lytle says that Oregon sheep are
In hotter condition now than ever be
fore, there being but a few Isolated
cases of scab on the ranges.
The wool market, while weaker
than usual, he expects will Improve
before very long, as the growers are
holding their product for higher
prices- None of the choice wool clips
of eastern Oregon have been sold yet,
as the sheep raisers are all In cir
cumstances that enable them to hold
their product until the price suits
them.
Secretary Dan Smythe of the Ore
gon Woolgrowers' association Is also
In Portland. He says the Oregon
sheepmen are well plensed with the
outcome of their recent fight with
the Washington woolralsers, who
were defeated In their latest attempt
to grab some of the Oregon range in
the Wcnaha forest reserve.

Deputy Sheriff W. J. Drlscoll was
removed from office today by Sheriff
Hodgln, acting at this time because his
own resignation removes him from of
fice next Monday and he had to act
soon or not at all, says the Boise Capi
tal News. The removal was made be
cause of the activity of Drlscoll In tho
prosecution of gambling cases this
spring and because the demand was
made by Chief of Police Francis and
Mayor Haines, who feel that the Inter
ference with gambling caused them
considerable unpleasantness, t say
the least of-it, according to Mr. Drls
coll and his friends, notwithstanding
tho denial of Hodgln that the gambl
ing matter had'anythlng to do with It.

Another big dam will be construct
ed In southern Idaho by the Twin
Falls Land & Water company, the pro
posed structure to be 135 feet high
and 8S0 feet long at the top and to
form a storage reservoir In the can
yon of the Goose creek, 25 miles south
of Burley with a capacity of 65,000
acre-feet of water for the Oakley pro
ject, another segregation of 60,000
acres applied for by the land board
for the company which Is triangular
In shape and situated between Oakley,
Mllner and Burley, says the Boise
Capital News.
Eagle Valley Construction.
At a meeting of the stockholders
of the Eagle valley railway held in
this cltv this week the necessary pa
pers were signed, mortgaging the
property to go ahead with construc
tion work and it Is absolutely certain
that work win begin inside or tne next
six weeks, says the Baker City Demo
crat. The construction company organ
ized In the east Is ready to go ahead
and Its equipment will arrive here
shortly.
Potatoes Yield Excellent Crop.
The results of the potato crops of
many settlers are sufficient evidence
that this irrigated soil is bound to be
very productive, says the Hermlston
Herald. For more than three weeks
new potatoes have been ready for
market.
F. G. Bancroft has been having ex
cellent yields from his tract south of
town, the potatoes' being of fine fla
vor and quality. The first of the
week he brought In 500 pounds
which brought 5 cents per pound., Mr.
Bancroft evinces great confidence In
the producing possibilities of these
lands and his tract, though not a year
old, is conclusive proof that his faith
Is well founded.

A waterspout occurred a few eve
nings ago about sundown, covering
quite an area of country Included in
which Is the Dan mine, and the
George Borman ranch east and south
of the mine, says the Baker City
Democrat.
The flood filled up the tunnel of
the mine with water and mud about
10 feet, and mine timbers, 56 In
number, and 12x12 Inches In diame
ter, were washed from the mine Into
the grain field on the ranch.
