Read the East Oregonian.
The remarkable growth of the
strawbery industry In the Freewater
M 11 ton district Is shown In the state
ment of the Freewater Times, which
places the value of this year's crop
at 150,000. B lraif
The Times says of the crop and
the amounts handled by each of the
fruit companies of Freewater.
Enquiries at the different packing
and commission houses of the city re
veal something of the meaning of the
strawberry crop to our fruit men
and the community In general. This
year the berries are lasting longer,
and with somewhat larger acreage
are producing more berries than a
year ago.
So says X. W. Mumford, local man
ager of the Walla Walla Produce Co.,
of this city. His firm handled up to
date about $10,000 worth of straw
berries and It is safe to say will han
dle $2000 more, making a total of
112,000.
The Shields Fruit company have a
similar record, their shipments to
date In strawberries crowd $10,000.
The Milton Fruit Growers' union,
though handicapped for a few weeEs
on account of their new building not
being completed, have handled al
most as many, while the "Brady, Had
Uy. Mitchell Co. handled about $7.-j
000, Buffum Catton at Locust $5.
000. while local shipments and sale
by peddlers will easily run over $5,- :
000 more.
It will be no exaggeration to put the
receipts by the fruit men for the pres. !
ent season at $50,000.

Firt Can' I'imIct Xw Law Has Been
Filed nt La Grande.
A case was filed In the circuit court
at La Grande which has considerable
distinction in that It is the first case
In Oregon to come under the new In
terstate commerce law passed by congress.
The suit Involves the question of
rates from Portland to that city and
the principles in it are the O. R. & N.,
by Attorney C. A. Johns, for the com
pany, and O. F. Coolldee.
The litigation is to recover the dif
ference between 35 and 60 cents per
100 on a shipment of cement to La
Grande. Mr. Coolide paid his freight
till at the rate of 33 cents per 100 and
the new laws of the commerce depart
ment establishes a rate of 60 cents per
100.
