Fenced U. S. Land.
Dick Reckman, a farmer living
near Grass Valley, Sherman county,
was fined $50 yesterday at Portland
and sentenced to spend six hours m
Jail by Judge Wolverton in the Uni
ted States district court, having been
Indicted by the grand Jury on a
charge of illegally fencing govern
ment land, say The Dalles Chron
icle. The land which Reckman Is said
to have fenced Is in Sherman coun
ty. He had a fence around 740 acres.
Reckman's defense was that he did
not know he was doing wrong and
that the fence was removed as soon
as the question was called to his at
tention.
Reckman was represented In court
by counsel and a pea of guilty as
charged was entered.
To save Reckman the expense of
a trip to Portland the court will allow
him to serve his sentence in the Sher
man county Jail instead of Multno
muh. New Irrigation Project.
Work h3 been begun on the Black-
foot reservation Two Medicine project
n Montana, which will Irrigate about
30.000 acre. Indian teams and labor
will be utilized as far as possible, says
the Spokane Chronicle.

THAW HEARING TODAY. ,

Poughkeepsle, N. P., June 13. Be
fore Judge Morschauser at the special
term today, attorneys for Harry K.
Thaw will ask for the issuance of an
order committing Thaw to some non
criminal institution for the insane.
District Attorney Jerome will vigor
ously opp6se such action.
James G. Graham, ooufBel for
Thaw, has asked Mr. Jerome' to con
sent to a commitment to one of the
non-crlmlnal state hospitals, prefer
ably the one at Middletown, N. Y.,
where it Is believed the surroundings
would be more conducive to recovery
than at Matteawan. Mr. Graham
contends thafMri Thaw is entitled to
this much consideration since he was
acquitted of the charge of murder,
and is therefore not a criminal in the
sight of the law. Mr. Jerome insists
on his return to Matteawan, when
there are less chances for escape.

Spokane Has Firebug.
That there Is a firebug in Spokane
who makes a specialty of lumber
mills is the belief of the majority oi
tha members of the fire department
who have assisted in the fight against
fire in five big mills in the last year,
stlys the Spokane Chronicle.
The Central Lumber company on
the comer of Jefferson street and
College avenue, Is the latest mill to
be completely destroyed. The fire
was discovered Wednesday shortly af
ter midnight by Merchant Policeman
Howard who turned in the alarm. The
fire soread rapidly and a general
alarm wa turned In, calling out all
the apparatus In the city.
The fire was a hot one and threat
ened for a time to spread to the near
by dwellings, the wind carrying the
heat and burning cinders over a wide
area. The fire is believed to have
started In the rear of the office build-
In. It spread rapidly and came near
catching the watchman, who slept in
front of the building.
Incendarlsm Is the only cause to
which the fire can be attributed. The
plant was operated by elctrlclty and
great care was manifested In Install
ng the wires to make certain as pos
sible no short circuit could result. An
other strong feature Is the fact that
the mill, as well as all others which
have been burned, caught fire In the
dead of night when there was the
east possible danger.
The loss. will run between $15,000
and $18,000 with Insurance amount
ing to about $10,000. The machinery
