family to Hood River and devote all
of his time to the Interests of the
spray factory.
He stated In an Interview that
things would be all In shape soon
and that the company would be ready
to supply Hood River with tlta spray
for fall use.

sprays known to the horticultural
Industry, and we are confident that
any spray that will stand the test of.
the Hood 'River ddmands, will be Jn

Miller Talks With Handier.
R. D. Miller of Portlund, traffic
manager of the O. R. & N., Is in the
city today conferring with the farm

house sites, says the Walla Walla
Bulletin. He met with the ranchers
from the vicinity of Valley Grove this
morning and this afternoon is dis.

The farmers have taken up the,
matter in earnest of fighting the ware
house combine by erecting their own
warehouses, but have been having
some difficulty In getting suitable
sites. They claim that in places the
railroads refuse to give them a good
place to build on. In some instances
they say the warehouse combine Is
playing with the railroads.

That there was genuine rejoicing in
Eugene when the news of the passagi
of the U. of O. appropriation by the
people of Oregon reached that city,
Id shown by the following from the
Eugene Guard:
A parade, songs, yells, rooters'
dances, fireworks, a great bonfire
and .speeches filled Eugene and the
university with Joy last night In cele
bration of tho victory of the Univer
sity of Oregon appropriation bill over
the referendum. The girls of the col
lego also took an active part in the'
celebration by forming a long line
from Vlllard and parading to the
grand stand, holding high over their
heads Japanese lantern.

nlng's entertainment was on Klncaid
field from the time the long string of
students fired the Roman candles un
til before the body of men closed In
to listen to the speeehmnklng.
From a line 200 yards long three
hundred of the. candles flared Into
the heavens. Immediately afterward
plnwheels burst from the same line,
showering sparks like 200 newly
broken electric circuits. In the
bleachers the band played "America,"
the girls in tho grand stand keeping
time o the music by waving their
glowing lanterns.
As the bonfire burst a hundred fret
Into, the air the whole sawdust field
come wlerd to the onlookers, but as
the whole body of people, perhaps
2,000, with hats off, sung the won
derful patriotic song that has Stirred
so many millions, a still deeper feel
ing of thanks and reverence pervaded
the whole gathering.
Before the rooters and onlookers
gathered on Klncaid Field, the 'var
sity boya marched to the business part
of the city, and headed by .the fac
ulty, some of the regents, and Presi
dent Campbell, paraded to the foot
ball field.
President Campbell was the first
speaker, and delivered 'the main ad
dress of the evening, full of thought
for the future and thanks for the
past.. Other speakers were Regent
S. H. Friendly, Representative Allen
Enston, Professor I. M. Glen and
Mayor J. D. Matlock.
While the University victory was
prophesied and expected, the relief
among. the faculty and students Is
very great, for nearly every individ
ual at the college was depending for
future plans to a more or less extent
upon the appropriation passing. The
fight for the university has lasted
from the opening 'of the legislature
last year until last Monday app'roxl
mately a year and a half of ceaseless
effort and expenditure by faculty, stu
dents, alumni and supporters.

Norman A. Kelley, a pioneer real
dent of Morow county, died at the
neppner sanatorium last Thursday
night after a long illnes from cancer
of the bladder, says the Heppner
Times. He was 65 years and two
months old at the time of his death
Mr. Kelly was a pioneer sheepman
of this county, having been in that
buslnes for about 30 years In the
county. During his long residence he
had accumulated considerable prop
erty in livestock and real estate, and
up to a couple of years ago he had
conducted his own business affairs,

ed him leasing his ranch out, which
he did to S. P. Devln, who is now run
nlng the ranch and livestock. Be
side a ranch on Willow creek a few
miles above Heppner. .he owns real
estate in the Blue mountains, where
he grazed his sheep in summer, hi

to several hundred acres.
Fruit Hurt by Frost.
The continued cold weather Is dam
aging the grain crops, and also the
fruit to some extent, says the La
Grande Observer. So says C. D,
Huffman. The gfaln needs moisture
and sunshine, especially on the Sand-
rldge. Very little rain has fallen there
and the ground Is rather dry. The
cold, cloudy weather Is hurting the
cherry and apple crops to some ex
tent, though not yet enough to cut
the crop short. Apples are dropping
but most of the trees are overloaded
There is no need for; any grower to be
aiarmer because his fruit crop seems
backward, for a few days of warm'
sunshiny weather will make a great
dlference in the appearance of the
orchards.

When Savannah was invested by the
American army Captain French, with
a small body of British regulars and
five small vessels, was stationed 20
miles up the river, and the proximity
of the American force made him
nervous. Colonel John White of the
Georgia line wanted to capture this
detachment, but no soldiers could be
spared by the American general for
the undertaking. Now, the colonel
was a determined and masterful man
and resolved to make the venture on
his own account. He persuaded three
orderlies and Captain Etholm to uid
him.
,.t the fall of night they built a
great many fires In the woods near
the British post. Then the colonel
and his four friends, "imitating the
manner of the stuff, rode with haste
in various directions, giving orders In
a loud voice. French neenme satis
fled that a large body of the ''enemy
were upon him, and. being summoned
by Colonel White, he surrendered his
detachment, the crews of five vessels
and 130 stands of arms."
Colonel White pretended that he-
must keep back hla troops, as Tory
outrages had Infuriated them and in
discriminate slaughter might take
place. He took the parole of the
British captain nnd soldiers not again
to serve, gave them three guides, his
orderlies, to escort them to safe quar
ters and hurried them away before
daybreak lest the fury of his pretend
ed soldiers should fall upon them.
